1 Listen to the message that the LORD has spoken to you, nation of Israel. Hear the word that the LORD speaks to you, O house of Israel. Hear what the LORD says to you, people of Israel.
2 This is what the LORD says: Don't learn the practices of the nations. Don't be frightened by the signs in the sky because the nations are frightened by them. Thus says the LORD: “Learn not the way of the nations, nor be dismayed at the signs of the heavens because the nations are dismayed at them, This is what the LORD says: “Do not learn the ways of the nations or be terrified by signs in the heavens, though the nations are terrified by them.
3 The religion of the people is worthless. Woodcutters cut down trees from the forest. The hands of craftsmen prepare them with axes. for the customs of the peoples are vanity. A tree from the forest is cut down and worked with an axe by the hands of a craftsman. For the practices of the peoples are worthless; they cut a tree out of the forest, and a craftsman shapes it with his chisel.
4 Craftsmen decorate them with silver and gold and fasten them [together] with hammers and nails so that they won't fall over. They decorate it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so that it cannot move. They adorn it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so it will not totter.
5 These trees are like scarecrows in cucumber gardens. They aren't able to speak. They have to be carried, because they can't walk. Don't be afraid of them. They can't harm you. They can't do you any good either. Their idols are like scarecrows in a cucumber field, and they cannot speak; they have to be carried, for they cannot walk. Do not be afraid of them, for they cannot do evil, neither is it in them to do good.” Like a scarecrow in a cucumber field, their idols cannot speak; they must be carried because they cannot walk. Do not fear them; they can do no harm nor can they do any good.”
6 No one is like you, O LORD. You are great. Your name is powerful. There is none like you, O LORD; you are great, and your name is great in might. No one is like you, LORD; you are great, and your name is mighty in power.
7 Everyone fears you, O King of the Nations. This is what you deserve. No one is like you among all the wise people in the nations or in all their kingdoms. Who would not fear you, O King of the nations? For this is your due; for among all the wise ones of the nations and in all their kingdoms there is none like you. Who should not fear you, King of the nations? This is your due. Among all the wise leaders of the nations and in all their kingdoms, there is no one like you.
8 They are complete idiots. They learn nonsense from wooden idols. They are both stupid and foolish; the instruction of idols is but wood! They are all senseless and foolish; they are taught by worthless wooden idols.
9 Hammered silver is brought from Tarshish and gold from Uphaz. Craftsmen and goldsmiths shape these metals. The clothing for the idols is blue and purple, all made by skilled workers. Beaten silver is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz. They are the work of the craftsman and of the hands of the goldsmith; their clothing is violet and purple; they are all the work of skilled men. Hammered silver is brought from Tarshish and gold from Uphaz. What the craftsman and goldsmith have made is then dressed in blue and purple— all made by skilled workers.
10 But the LORD is the only God. He is the living God and eternal king. The earth trembles when he is angry. The nations can't endure his fury. But the LORD is the true God; he is the living God and the everlasting King. At his wrath the earth quakes, and the nations cannot endure his indignation. But the LORD is the true God; he is the living God, the eternal King. When he is angry, the earth trembles; the nations cannot endure his wrath.
11 Tell them this: These gods will disappear from the earth and from under heaven because they didn't make heaven and earth. Thus shall you say to them: “The gods who did not make the heavens and the earth shall perish from the earth and from under the heavens.” “Tell them this: ‘These gods, who did not make the heavens and the earth, will perish from the earth and from under the heavens.’”
12 The LORD made the earth by his power. He set up the world by his skill. He stretched out the world by his understanding. It is he who made the earth by his power, who established the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding stretched out the heavens. But God made the earth by his power; he founded the world by his wisdom and stretched out the heavens by his understanding.
13 He speaks, and the water in the sky produces a storm. He makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth. He makes lightning flash with the rain. He brings wind out of his storehouses. When he utters his voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens, and he makes the mist rise from the ends of the earth. He makes lightning for the rain, and he brings forth the wind from his storehouses. When he thunders, the waters in the heavens roar; he makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth. He sends lightning with the rain and brings out the wind from his storehouses.
14 Everyone is stupid and ignorant. Metalsmiths are put to shame by their idols. Their statues are false [gods]. They can't breathe. Every man is stupid and without knowledge; every goldsmith is put to shame by his idols, for his images are false, and there is no breath in them. Everyone is senseless and without knowledge; every goldsmith is shamed by his idols. The images he makes are a fraud; they have no breath in them.
15 They are worthless jokes. When they are punished, they disappear. They are worthless, a work of delusion; at the time of their punishment they shall perish. They are worthless, the objects of mockery; when their judgment comes, they will perish.
16 Jacob's God isn't like them. He made everything, and Israel is the tribe that belongs to him. His name is the LORD of Armies. Not like these is he who is the portion of Jacob, for he is the one who formed all things, and Israel is the tribe of his inheritance; the LORD of hosts is his name. He who is the Portion of Jacob is not like these, for he is the Maker of all things, including Israel, the people of his inheritance— the LORD Almighty is his name.
17 Pick up your bags. You are being blockaded. Gather up your bundle from the ground, O you who dwell under siege! Gather up your belongings to leave the land, you who live under siege.
18 This is what the LORD says: I am going to throw out those who live in the land at this time and cause trouble for them so that they will feel it. For thus says the LORD: “Behold, I am slinging out the inhabitants of the land at this time, and I will bring distress on them, that they may feel it.” For this is what the LORD says: “At this time I will hurl out those who live in this land; I will bring distress on them so that they may be captured.”
19 Oh, I'm wounded! My wound is serious. Then I thought that this is my punishment, and I will bear it. Woe is me because of my hurt! My wound is grievous. But I said, “Truly this is an affliction, and I must bear it.” Woe to me because of my injury! My wound is incurable! Yet I said to myself, “This is my sickness, and I must endure it.”
20 My tent is destroyed, and all my ropes are broken. My children have left me and have disappeared. There's no one to set up my tent again or put up my tent curtains. My tent is destroyed, and all my cords are broken; my children have gone from me, and they are not; there is no one to spread my tent again and to set up my curtains. My tent is destroyed; all its ropes are snapped. My children are gone from me and are no more; no one is left now to pitch my tent or to set up my shelter.
21 The shepherds are foolish. They don't look to the LORD for help. That is why they won't succeed, and all their flocks will be scattered. For the shepherds are stupid and do not inquire of the LORD; therefore they have not prospered, and all their flock is scattered. The shepherds are senseless and do not inquire of the LORD; so they do not prosper and all their flock is scattered.
22 The report has arrived. A tremendous uproar is coming from the land of the north. Its army will destroy Judah's cities and make them homes for jackals. A voice, a rumor! Behold, it comes!— a great commotion out of the north country to make the cities of Judah a desolation, a lair of jackals. Listen! The report is coming— a great commotion from the land of the north! It will make the towns of Judah desolate, a haunt of jackals.
23 O LORD, I know that the way humans act is not under their control. Humans do not direct their steps as they walk. I know, O LORD, that the way of man is not in himself, that it is not in man who walks to direct his steps. LORD, I know that people’s lives are not their own; it is not for them to direct their steps.
24 Correct me, O LORD, but please be fair. Don't correct me when you're angry. Otherwise, you'll reduce me to nothing. Correct me, O LORD, but in justice; not in your anger, lest you bring me to nothing. Discipline me, LORD, but only in due measure— not in your anger, or you will reduce me to nothing.
25 Pour out your fury on the nations who don't know you and on people who don't worship you. They have devoured the descendants of Jacob. They have devoured them completely. They have destroyed their homes. Pour out your wrath on the nations that know you not, and on the peoples that call not on your name, for they have devoured Jacob; they have devoured him and consumed him, and have laid waste his habitation. Pour out your wrath on the nations that do not acknowledge you, on the peoples who do not call on your name. For they have devoured Jacob; they have devoured him completely and destroyed his homeland.
