Heare ye the worde of the Lord that he speaketh vnto you, O house of Israel. Hear the word that the LORD speaks to you, O house of Israel. Hear what the LORD says to you, people of Israel.
Thus saith the Lorde, Learne not the way of the heathen, & be not afraid for the signes of heauen, though the heathen be afraid of such. Thus says the LORD: “Learn not the way of the nations, nor be dismayed at the signs of the heavens because the nations are dismayed at them, This is what the LORD says: “Do not learn the ways of the nations or be terrified by signs in the heavens, though the nations are terrified by them.
For the customes of the people are vaine: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest (which is the worke of the handes of the carpenter) with the axe, for the customs of the peoples are vanity. A tree from the forest is cut down and worked with an axe by the hands of a craftsman. For the practices of the peoples are worthless; they cut a tree out of the forest, and a craftsman shapes it with his chisel.
And another decketh it with siluer, and with golde: they fasten it with nailes, and hammers, that it fall not. They decorate it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so that it cannot move. They adorn it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so it will not totter.
The idoles stande vp as the palme tree, but speake not: they are borne because they cannot go feare them not, for they cannot do euill, neither can they do good. Their idols are like scarecrows in a cucumber field, and they cannot speak; they have to be carried, for they cannot walk. Do not be afraid of them, for they cannot do evil, neither is it in them to do good.” Like a scarecrow in a cucumber field, their idols cannot speak; they must be carried because they cannot walk. Do not fear them; they can do no harm nor can they do any good.”
There is none like vnto thee, O Lorde: thou art great, and thy name is great in power. There is none like you, O LORD; you are great, and your name is great in might. No one is like you, LORD; you are great, and your name is mighty in power.
Who would not feare thee, O King of nations? For to thee appertaineth the dominion: for among all the wise men of the Gentiles, and in al their kingdomes there is none like thee. Who would not fear you, O King of the nations? For this is your due; for among all the wise ones of the nations and in all their kingdoms there is none like you. Who should not fear you, King of the nations? This is your due. Among all the wise leaders of the nations and in all their kingdoms, there is no one like you.
But, altogether they dote, and are foolish: for the stocke is a doctrine of vanitie. They are both stupid and foolish; the instruction of idols is but wood! They are all senseless and foolish; they are taught by worthless wooden idols.
Siluer plates are brought from Tarshish, & golde from Vphaz, for the worke of the workeman, and the handes of the founder: the blewe silke, and the purple is their clothing: all these things are made by cunning men. Beaten silver is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz. They are the work of the craftsman and of the hands of the goldsmith; their clothing is violet and purple; they are all the work of skilled men. Hammered silver is brought from Tarshish and gold from Uphaz. What the craftsman and goldsmith have made is then dressed in blue and purple— all made by skilled workers.
But the Lord is the God of trueth: he is the liuing God, and an euerlasting King: at his anger the earth shal tremble, and the nations cannot abide his wrath. But the LORD is the true God; he is the living God and the everlasting King. At his wrath the earth quakes, and the nations cannot endure his indignation. But the LORD is the true God; he is the living God, the eternal King. When he is angry, the earth trembles; the nations cannot endure his wrath.
(Thus shall you say vnto them, The gods that haue not made the heauens and the earth, shall perish from the earth, and from vnder these heauens) Thus shall you say to them: “The gods who did not make the heavens and the earth shall perish from the earth and from under the heavens.” “Tell them this: ‘These gods, who did not make the heavens and the earth, will perish from the earth and from under the heavens.’”
He hath made the earth by his power, and established the worlde by his wisedome, and hath stretched out the heauen by his discretion. It is he who made the earth by his power, who established the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding stretched out the heavens. But God made the earth by his power; he founded the world by his wisdom and stretched out the heavens by his understanding.
Hee giueth by his voyce the multitude of waters in the heauen, and he causeth the cloudes to ascend from the endes of the earth: he turneth lightnings to rayne, and bringeth forth the winde out of his treasures. When he utters his voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens, and he makes the mist rise from the ends of the earth. He makes lightning for the rain, and he brings forth the wind from his storehouses. When he thunders, the waters in the heavens roar; he makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth. He sends lightning with the rain and brings out the wind from his storehouses.
Euery man is a beast by his owne knowledge: euery founder is confounded by the grauen image: for his melting is but falsehood, and there is no breath therein. Every man is stupid and without knowledge; every goldsmith is put to shame by his idols, for his images are false, and there is no breath in them. Everyone is senseless and without knowledge; every goldsmith is shamed by his idols. The images he makes are a fraud; they have no breath in them.
They are vanitie, and the worke of errours: in the time of their visitation they shall perish. They are worthless, a work of delusion; at the time of their punishment they shall perish. They are worthless, the objects of mockery; when their judgment comes, they will perish.
The portion of Iaakob is not like them: for he is the maker of all things, and Israel is the rodde of his inheritance: the Lorde of hostes is his Name. Not like these is he who is the portion of Jacob, for he is the one who formed all things, and Israel is the tribe of his inheritance; the LORD of hosts is his name. He who is the Portion of Jacob is not like these, for he is the Maker of all things, including Israel, the people of his inheritance— the LORD Almighty is his name.
Gather vp thy wares out of the land, O thou that dwellest in the strong place. Gather up your bundle from the ground, O you who dwell under siege! Gather up your belongings to leave the land, you who live under siege.
For thus sayth the Lorde, Beholde, at this time I will throwe as with a sling the inhabitants of the lande, and will trouble them, and they shal finde it so. For thus says the LORD: “Behold, I am slinging out the inhabitants of the land at this time, and I will bring distress on them, that they may feel it.” For this is what the LORD says: “At this time I will hurl out those who live in this land; I will bring distress on them so that they may be captured.”
Wo is me for my destruction, and my grieuous plague: but I thought, Yet it is my sorow, and I will beare it. Woe is me because of my hurt! My wound is grievous. But I said, “Truly this is an affliction, and I must bear it.” Woe to me because of my injury! My wound is incurable! Yet I said to myself, “This is my sickness, and I must endure it.”
My tabernacle is destroyed, and all my coardes are broken: my children are gone from me, and are not: there is none to spread out my tent any more, and to set vp my curtaines. My tent is destroyed, and all my cords are broken; my children have gone from me, and they are not; there is no one to spread my tent again and to set up my curtains. My tent is destroyed; all its ropes are snapped. My children are gone from me and are no more; no one is left now to pitch my tent or to set up my shelter.
For the Pastours are become beasts, and haue not sought the Lorde: therefore haue they none vnderstanding: and all the flockes of their pastures are scattered. For the shepherds are stupid and do not inquire of the LORD; therefore they have not prospered, and all their flock is scattered. The shepherds are senseless and do not inquire of the LORD; so they do not prosper and all their flock is scattered.
Beholde, the noyse of the brute is come, & a great commotion out of the North countrey to make the cities of Iudah desolate, and a denne of dragons. A voice, a rumor! Behold, it comes!— a great commotion out of the north country to make the cities of Judah a desolation, a lair of jackals. Listen! The report is coming— a great commotion from the land of the north! It will make the towns of Judah desolate, a haunt of jackals.
O Lord, I knowe, that the way of man is not in himselfe, neyther is it in man to walke and to direct his steps. I know, O LORD, that the way of man is not in himself, that it is not in man who walks to direct his steps. LORD, I know that people’s lives are not their own; it is not for them to direct their steps.
O Lorde, correct mee, but with iudgement, not in thine anger, least thou bring mee to nothing. Correct me, O LORD, but in justice; not in your anger, lest you bring me to nothing. Discipline me, LORD, but only in due measure— not in your anger, or you will reduce me to nothing.
Powre out thy wrath vpon the heathen, that knowe thee not, and vpon the families that call not on thy Name: for they haue eaten vp Iaakob and deuoured him & consumed him, & haue made his habitation desolate. Pour out your wrath on the nations that know you not, and on the peoples that call not on your name, for they have devoured Jacob; they have devoured him and consumed him, and have laid waste his habitation. Pour out your wrath on the nations that do not acknowledge you, on the peoples who do not call on your name. For they have devoured Jacob; they have devoured him completely and destroyed his homeland.
