1 IN those days Ezechias was sick even to death, and Isaias the son of Amos the prophet came unto him, and said to him: Thus saith the Lord: Take order with thy house, for thou shalt die, and not live. In those days Hezekiah became sick and was at the point of death. And Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz came to him, and said to him, “Thus says the LORD: Set your house in order, for you shall die, you shall not recover.” In those days Hezekiah became ill and was at the point of death. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz went to him and said, “This is what the LORD says: Put your house in order, because you are going to die; you will not recover.”
2 And Ezechias turned his face toward the wall, and prayed to the Lord, Then Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the LORD, Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the LORD,
3 And said: I beseech thee, O Lord, remember how I have walked before thee in truth, and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in thy sight. And Ezechias wept with great weeping. and said, “Please, O LORD, remember how I have walked before you in faithfulness and with a whole heart, and have done what is good in your sight.” And Hezekiah wept bitterly. “Remember, LORD, how I have walked before you faithfully and with wholehearted devotion and have done what is good in your eyes.” And Hezekiah wept bitterly.
4 And the word of the Lord came to Isaias, saying: Then the word of the LORD came to Isaiah: Then the word of the LORD came to Isaiah:
5 Go and say to Ezechias: Thus saith the Lord the God of David thy father: I have heard thy prayer, and I have seen thy tears: behold I will add to thy days fifteen years: “Go and say to Hezekiah, Thus says the LORD, the God of David your father: I have heard your prayer; I have seen your tears. Behold, I will add fifteen years to your life. “Go and tell Hezekiah, ‘This is what the LORD, the God of your father David, says: I have heard your prayer and seen your tears; I will add fifteen years to your life.
6 And I will deliver thee and this city out of the hand of the king of the Assyrians, and I will protect it. I will deliver you and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria, and will defend this city. And I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria. I will defend this city.
7 And this shall be a sign to thee from the Lord, that the Lord will do this word which he hath spoken: “This shall be the sign to you from the LORD, that the LORD will do this thing that he has promised: “’This is the LORD’s sign to you that the LORD will do what he has promised:
8 Behold I will bring again the shadow of the lines, by which it is now gone down in the sun dial of Achaz with the sun, ten lines backward. And the sun returned ten lines by the degrees by which it was gone down. Behold, I will make the shadow cast by the declining sun on the dial of Ahaz turn back ten steps.” So the sun turned back on the dial the ten steps by which it had declined. I will make the shadow cast by the sun go back the ten steps it has gone down on the stairway of Ahaz.’” So the sunlight went back the ten steps it had gone down.
9 The writing of Ezechias king of Juda, when he had been sick, and was recovered of his sickness. A writing of Hezekiah king of Judah, after he had been sick and had recovered from his sickness: A writing of Hezekiah king of Judah after his illness and recovery:
10 I said: In the midst of my days I shall go to the gates of hell: I sought for the residue of my years. I said, In the middle of my days I must depart; I am consigned to the gates of Sheol for the rest of my years. I said, “In the prime of my life must I go through the gates of death and be robbed of the rest of my years?”
11 I said: I shall not see the Lord God in the land of the living. I shall behold man no more, nor the inhabitant of rest. I said, I shall not see the LORD, the LORD in the land of the living; I shall look on man no more among the inhabitants of the world. I said, “I will not again see the LORD himself in the land of the living; no longer will I look on my fellow man, or be with those who now dwell in this world.
12 My generation is at an end, and it is rolled away from me, as a shepherd's tent. My life is cut off, as by a weaver: whilst I was yet but beginning, he out me off: from morning even to night thou wilt make an end of me. My dwelling is plucked up and removed from me like a shepherd’s tent; like a weaver I have rolled up my life; he cuts me off from the loom; from day to night you bring me to an end; Like a shepherd’s tent my house has been pulled down and taken from me. Like a weaver I have rolled up my life, and he has cut me off from the loom; day and night you made an end of me.
13 I hoped till morning, as a lion so hath he broken all my bones: from morning even to night thou wilt make an end of me. I calmed myself until morning; like a lion he breaks all my bones; from day to night you bring me to an end. I waited patiently till dawn, but like a lion he broke all my bones; day and night you made an end of me.
14 I will cry like a young swallow, I will meditate like a dove: my eyes are weakened looking upward: Lord, I suffer violence, answer thou for me. Like a swallow or a crane I chirp; I moan like a dove. My eyes are weary with looking upward. O Lord, I am oppressed; be my pledge of safety! I cried like a swift or thrush, I moaned like a mourning dove. My eyes grew weak as I looked to the heavens. I am being threatened; Lord, come to my aid!”
15 What shall I say, or what shall he answer for me, whereas he himself hath done it? I will recount to thee all my years in the bitterness of my soul. What shall I say? For he has spoken to me, and he himself has done it. I walk slowly all my years because of the bitterness of my soul. But what can I say? He has spoken to me, and he himself has done this. I will walk humbly all my years because of this anguish of my soul.
16 O Lord, if man's life be such, and the life of my spirit be in such things as these, thou shalt correct me, and make me to live. O Lord, by these things men live, and in all these is the life of my spirit. Oh restore me to health and make me live! Lord, by such things people live; and my spirit finds life in them too. You restored me to health and let me live.
17 Behold in peace is my bitterness most bitter: but thou best delivered my soul that it should not perish, thou hast cast all my sins behind thy back. Behold, it was for my welfare that I had great bitterness; but in love you have delivered my life from the pit of destruction, for you have cast all my sins behind your back. Surely it was for my benefit that I suffered such anguish. In your love you kept me from the pit of destruction; you have put all my sins behind your back.
18 For hell shall not confess to thee, neither shall death praise thee: nor shall they that go down into the pit, look for thy truth. For Sheol does not thank you; death does not praise you; those who go down to the pit do not hope for your faithfulness. For the grave cannot praise you, death cannot sing your praise; those who go down to the pit cannot hope for your faithfulness.
19 The living, the living, he shall give praise to thee, as I do this day: the father shall make thy truth known to the children. The living, the living, he thanks you, as I do this day; the father makes known to the children your faithfulness. The living, the living—they praise you, as I am doing today; parents tell their children about your faithfulness.
20 O Lord, save me, and we will sing our psalms all the days of our life in the house of the Lord. The LORD will save me, and we will play my music on stringed instruments all the days of our lives, at the house of the LORD. The LORD will save me, and we will sing with stringed instruments all the days of our lives in the temple of the LORD.
21 Now Isaias had ordered that they should take a lump of figs, and lay it as it plaster upon the wound, and that he should be healed. Now Isaiah had said, “Let them take a cake of figs and apply it to the boil, that he may recover.” Isaiah had said, “Prepare a poultice of figs and apply it to the boil, and he will recover.”
22 And Ezechias bed said: What shah be the sign that I shah go up to the house of the Lord? Hezekiah also had said, “What is the sign that I shall go up to the house of the LORD?” Hezekiah had asked, “What will be the sign that I will go up to the temple of the LORD?”
