1 Israel was a luxuriant vine; he set forth fruit for himself. With the increase of his fruit, he made an increase of the altars; according to the richness of his land, they made rich the sacred pillars. Israel is a luxuriant vine that yields its fruit. The more his fruit increased, the more altars he built; as his country improved, he improved his pillars. Israel was a spreading vine; he brought forth fruit for himself. As his fruit increased, he built more altars; as his land prospered, he adorned his sacred stones.
2 Their heart has been divided, now they are guilty; He will break down their altars; He will demolish their sacred pillars. Their heart is false; now they must bear their guilt. The LORD will break down their altars and destroy their pillars. Their heart is deceitful, and now they must bear their guilt. The LORD will demolish their altars and destroy their sacred stones.
3 For now they say, “There is no king for us, because we did not fear YHWH; and as for the king, what could he do for us?” For now they will say: “We have no king, for we do not fear the LORD; and a king—what could he do for us?” Then they will say, “We have no king because we did not revere the LORD. But even if we had a king, what could he do for us?”
4 They have spoken words, swearing falsely in cutting a covenant, and judgment sprouts up like a poison in the furrows of the field. They utter mere words; with empty oaths they make covenants; so judgment springs up like poisonous weeds in the furrows of the field. They make many promises, take false oaths and make agreements; therefore lawsuits spring up like poisonous weeds in a plowed field.
5 For the calf of Beth-aven those dwelling in Samaria fear; indeed its people mourn over it, and its idolatrous priests who rejoiced over it, over its glory that has departed from it. The inhabitants of Samaria tremble for the calf of Beth-aven. Its people mourn for it, and so do its idolatrous priests— those who rejoiced over it and over its glory— for it has departed from them. The people who live in Samaria fear for the calf-idol of Beth Aven. Its people will mourn over it, and so will its idolatrous priests, those who had rejoiced over its splendor, because it is taken from them into exile.
6 Also it will be carried along to Assyria as tribute to the great king; Ephraim will receive shame, and Israel will be ashamed of his idol. The thing itself shall be carried to Assyria as tribute to the great king. Ephraim shall be put to shame, and Israel shall be ashamed of his idol. It will be carried to Assyria as tribute for the great king. Ephraim will be disgraced; Israel will be ashamed of its foreign alliances.
7 Samaria will be cut off with her king, like a twig on the face of the water. Samaria’s king shall perish like a twig on the face of the waters. Samaria’s king will be destroyed, swept away like a twig on the surface of the waters.
8 The high places of Aven will be destroyed, and the sin of Israel; the thorn and thistle will come up over their altars, and they will say to the mountains, “Cover us!” And to the hills, “Fall on us!” The high places of Aven, the sin of Israel, shall be destroyed. Thorn and thistle shall grow up on their altars, and they shall say to the mountains, “Cover us,” and to the hills, “Fall on us.” The high places of wickedness will be destroyed— it is the sin of Israel. Thorns and thistles will grow up and cover their altars. Then they will say to the mountains, “Cover us!” and to the hills, “Fall on us!”
9 From the days of Gibeah, you have sinned, O Israel. There they have stood. Did it not overtake them in Gibeah—the battle against the sons of iniquity? From the days of Gibeah, you have sinned, O Israel; there they have continued. Shall not the war against the unjust overtake them in Gibeah? “Since the days of Gibeah, you have sinned, Israel, and there you have remained. Will not war again overtake the evildoers in Gibeah?
10 When I desire, I will discipline them; and peoples will be gathered against them, at My disciplining them for the two of their transgressions. When I please, I will discipline them, and nations shall be gathered against them when they are bound up for their double iniquity. When I please, I will punish them; nations will be gathered against them to put them in bonds for their double sin.
11 And Ephraim is a trained heifer, loving to thresh; and I passed over upon her fair neck; I will drive Ephraim; Judah will plow; Jacob will harrow for him. Ephraim was a trained calf that loved to thresh, and I spared her fair neck; but I will put Ephraim to the yoke; Judah must plow; Jacob must harrow for himself. Ephraim is a trained heifer that loves to thresh; so I will put a yoke on her fair neck. I will drive Ephraim, Judah must plow, and Jacob must break up the ground.
12 Sow for yourselves unto righteousness, and reap to the mouth of loving devotion; break up for yourself the fallow ground, for it is time to seek YHWH, until He should come and shower righteousness upon you⁺. Sow for yourselves righteousness; reap steadfast love; break up your fallow ground, for it is the time to seek the LORD, that he may come and rain righteousness upon you. Sow righteousness for yourselves, reap the fruit of unfailing love, and break up your unplowed ground; for it is time to seek the LORD, until he comes and showers his righteousness on you.
13 You⁺ have plowed wickedness; you⁺ have reaped injustice; you⁺ have eaten the fruit of lies. Because you trusted in your own way, in the multitude of your mighty men, You have plowed iniquity; you have reaped injustice; you have eaten the fruit of lies. Because you have trusted in your own way and in the multitude of your warriors, But you have planted wickedness, you have reaped evil, you have eaten the fruit of deception. Because you have depended on your own strength and on your many warriors,
14 therefore will arise an uproar among your people, and all your fortresses will be destroyed, like the destruction of Shalman in Beth-arbel on the day of battle, when a mother upon her children was dashed to pieces. therefore the tumult of war shall arise among your people, and all your fortresses shall be destroyed, as Shalman destroyed Beth-arbel on the day of battle; mothers were dashed in pieces with their children. the roar of battle will rise against your people, so that all your fortresses will be devastated— as Shalman devastated Beth Arbel on the day of battle, when mothers were dashed to the ground with their children.
15 So may He do to you⁺, O Bethel, from the face of your⁺ great evil; at dawn he will be utterly cut off—the king of Israel! Thus it shall be done to you, O Bethel, because of your great evil. At dawn the king of Israel shall be utterly cut off. So will it happen to you, Bethel, because your wickedness is great. When that day dawns, the king of Israel will be completely destroyed.
