1	Now faith is the reality of what is hoped for, the proof of what is not seen.	Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.	Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.
2	For by this our ancestors were approved.	For by it the people of old received their commendation.	This is what the ancients were commended for.
3	By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was made from things that are not visible. 13	These all died in faith, although they had not received the things that were promised. But they saw them from a distance, greeted them, and confessed that they were foreigners and temporary residents on the earth.	These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth.	All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance, admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth.
14	Now those who say such things make it clear that they are seeking a homeland.	For people who speak thus make it clear that they are seeking a homeland.	People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own.
15	If they were thinking about where they came from, they would have had an opportunity to return.	If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return.	If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return.
16	But they now desire a better place—a heavenly one. Therefore, God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.	But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city. 17	By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac.
