1 And Jacob lifted up his eyes and he saw, and behold, Esau was coming, and with him four hundred men. And he divided the children to Leah and to Rachel and to the two maidservants. And Jacob lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, Esau was coming, and four hundred men with him. So he divided the children among Leah and Rachel and the two female servants. Jacob looked up and there was Esau, coming with his four hundred men; so he divided the children among Leah, Rachel and the two female servants.
2 And he put the maidservants and their children first, and Leah and her children behind them, and Rachel and Joseph behind them. And he put the servants with their children in front, then Leah with her children, and Rachel and Joseph last of all. He put the female servants and their children in front, Leah and her children next, and Rachel and Joseph in the rear.
3 And he himself passed over before them and he bowed himself to the earth seven times, until he came near to his brother. He himself went on before them, bowing himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother. He himself went on ahead and bowed down to the ground seven times as he approached his brother.
4 And Esau ran to meet him and embraced him, and he fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept. But Esau ran to meet him and embraced him and fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept. But Esau ran to meet Jacob and embraced him; he threw his arms around his neck and kissed him. And they wept.
5 And he lifted up his eyes and he saw the women and the children and he said, “Who are these with you?” And he said, “The children whom God has graciously given your servant.” And when Esau lifted up his eyes and saw the women and children, he said, “Who are these with you?” Jacob said, “The children whom God has graciously given your servant.” Then Esau looked up and saw the women and children. “Who are these with you?” he asked. Jacob answered, “They are the children God has graciously given your servant.”
6 And the maidservants came near, they and their children, and they bowed themselves. Then the servants drew near, they and their children, and bowed down. Then the female servants and their children approached and bowed down.
7 And Leah also came near, and her children, and they bowed themselves. And afterward Joseph came near, and Rachel, and they bowed themselves. Leah likewise and her children drew near and bowed down. And last Joseph and Rachel drew near, and they bowed down. Next, Leah and her children came and bowed down. Last of all came Joseph and Rachel, and they too bowed down.
8 And he said, “What is all this camp to you, that I have met?” And he said, “To find favor in the eyes of my lord.” Esau said, “What do you mean by all this company that I met?” Jacob answered, “To find favor in the sight of my lord.” Esau asked, “What’s the meaning of all these flocks and herds I met?” “To find favor in your eyes, my lord,” he said.
9 And Esau said, “I have much, my brother. Let it be to you what is yours.” But Esau said, “I have enough, my brother; keep what you have for yourself.” But Esau said, “I already have plenty, my brother. Keep what you have for yourself.”
10 And Jacob said, “No, please, if now I have found favor in your eyes, then you shall take my gift from my hand, for upon thus I have seen your face which is like seeing the face of God, and you have received me favorably. Jacob said, “No, please, if I have found favor in your sight, then accept my present from my hand. For I have seen your face, which is like seeing the face of God, and you have accepted me. “No, please!” said Jacob. “If I have found favor in your eyes, accept this gift from me. For to see your face is like seeing the face of God, now that you have received me favorably.
11 Please, take, my blessing that is brought to you, because God has been gracious to me, and because I have all.” And he urged him, and he took it. Please accept my blessing that is brought to you, because God has dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough.” Thus he urged him, and he took it. Please accept the present that was brought to you, for God has been gracious to me and I have all I need.” And because Jacob insisted, Esau accepted it.
12 And he said, “Let us journey and go on, and I will go before you.” Then Esau said, “Let us journey on our way, and I will go ahead of you.” Then Esau said, “Let us be on our way; I’ll accompany you.”
13 And he said to him, “My lord knows that the children are tender, and the flock and the cattle with me are nursing; and if they are driven hard one day, then all the flock will die. But Jacob said to him, “My lord knows that the children are frail, and that the nursing flocks and herds are a care to me. If they are driven hard for one day, all the flocks will die. But Jacob said to him, “My lord knows that the children are tender and that I must care for the ewes and cows that are nursing their young. If they are driven hard just one day, all the animals will die.
14 Please, let my lord go on before his servant, and I will lead on gently, according to the pace of the work that is before me, and according to the pace of the children, until that I come to my lord in Seir.” Let my lord pass on ahead of his servant, and I will lead on slowly, at the pace of the livestock that are ahead of me and at the pace of the children, until I come to my lord in Seir.” So let my lord go on ahead of his servant, while I move along slowly at the pace of the flocks and herds before me and the pace of the children, until I come to my lord in Seir.”
15 And Esau said, “Now let me leave with you some of the people who are with me.” And he said, “Why this? Let me find favor in the eyes of my lord.” So Esau said, “Let me leave with you some of the people who are with me.” But he said, “What need is there? Let me find favor in the sight of my lord.” Esau said, “Then let me leave some of my men with you.” “But why do that?” Jacob asked. “Just let me find favor in the eyes of my lord.”
16 And Esau turned back that day on his way to Seir. So Esau returned that day on his way to Seir. So that day Esau started on his way back to Seir.
17 And Jacob journeyed to Succoth and built for himself a house, and for his livestock he made booths. Upon thus he called the name of the place Succoth. But Jacob journeyed to Succoth, and built himself a house and made booths for his livestock. Therefore the name of the place is called Succoth. Jacob, however, went to Sukkoth, where he built a place for himself and made shelters for his livestock. That is why the place is called Sukkoth.
18 And Jacob came safely to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Paddan-aram. And he pitched his tent before the city. And Jacob came safely to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, on his way from Paddan-aram, and he camped before the city. After Jacob came from Paddan Aram, he arrived safely at the city of Shechem in Canaan and camped within sight of the city.
19 And he bought the portion of the field where he had pitched his tent from the hand of the sons of Hamor, father of Shechem, for a hundred kesitah. And from the sons of Hamor, Shechem’s father, he bought for a hundred pieces of money the piece of land on which he had pitched his tent. For a hundred pieces of silver, he bought from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem, the plot of ground where he pitched his tent.
20 And he erected there an altar, and he called it El-Elohe-Israel. There he erected an altar and called it El-Elohe-Israel. There he set up an altar and called it El Elohe Israel.
