1 In his old age Samuel appointed his sons as judges over Israel. When Samuel became old, he made his sons judges over Israel. When Samuel grew old, he appointed his sons as Israel’s leaders.
2 The name of his firstborn son was Joel, and the name of his second son was Abijah. They were judges in Beer Sheba. 6 But this request displeased Samuel, for they said, |Give us a king to lead us.| So Samuel prayed to the LORD. But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” And Samuel prayed to the LORD. But when they said, “Give us a king to lead us,” this displeased Samuel; so he prayed to the LORD.
7 The LORD said to Samuel, |Do everything the people request of you. For it is not you that they have rejected, but it is me that they have rejected as their king. And the LORD said to Samuel, “Obey the voice of the people in all that they say to you, for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over them. And the LORD told him: “Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king.
8 Just as they have done from the day that I brought them up from Egypt until this very day, they have rejected me and have served other gods. This is what they are also doing to you. According to all the deeds that they have done, from the day I brought them up out of Egypt even to this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are also doing to you. 9 So now do as they say. 19 But the people refused to heed Samuel's warning. Instead they said, |No! There will be a king over us! But the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel. And they said, “No! But there shall be a king over us, But the people refused to listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We want a king over us.
20 We will be like all the other nations. Our king will judge us and lead us and fight our battles.| that we also may be like all the nations, and that our king may judge us and go out before us and fight our battles.” Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles.”
21 So Samuel listened to everything the people said and then reported it to the LORD. And when Samuel had heard all the words of the people, he repeated them in the ears of the LORD. When Samuel heard all that the people said, he repeated it before the LORD.
22 The LORD said to Samuel, |Do as they say and install a king over them.| Then Samuel said to the men of Israel, |Each of you go back to his own city.| And the LORD said to Samuel, “Obey their voice and make them a king.” Samuel then said to the men of Israel, “Go every man to his city.” The LORD answered, “Listen to them and give them a king.” Then Samuel said to the Israelites, “Everyone go back to your own town.”
