1 And Saul spoke to Jonathan his son and to all his servants, that they should kill David. And Jonathan son of Saul delighted in David greatly. And Saul spoke to Jonathan his son and to all his servants, that they should kill David. But Jonathan, Saul’s son, delighted much in David. Saul told his son Jonathan and all the attendants to kill David. But Jonathan had taken a great liking to David
2 And Jonathan told David, saying, “Saul My father seeks to kill you. And now be on your guard, please, until the morning, and stay in a secret place and hide yourself. And Jonathan told David, “Saul my father seeks to kill you. Therefore be on your guard in the morning. Stay in a secret place and hide yourself. and warned him, “My father Saul is looking for a chance to kill you. Be on your guard tomorrow morning; go into hiding and stay there.
3 And I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are, and I will speak about you with my father. And I will observe what it is, and I will tell you.” And I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are, and I will speak to my father about you. And if I learn anything I will tell you.” I will go out and stand with my father in the field where you are. I’ll speak to him about you and will tell you what I find out.”
4 And Jonathan spoke well of David to Saul his father, and said to him, “Let not the king sin against his servant, against David, because he has not sinned against you, and because his works are very good toward you. And Jonathan spoke well of David to Saul his father and said to him, “Let not the king sin against his servant David, because he has not sinned against you, and because his deeds have brought good to you. Jonathan spoke well of David to Saul his father and said to him, “Let not the king do wrong to his servant David; he has not wronged you, and what he has done has benefited you greatly.
5 For he took his life in his hands and killed the Philistine, and YHWH brought about a great deliverance for all Israel. You saw it and rejoiced; and why would you sin against innocent blood to kill David for nothing?” For he took his life in his hand and he struck down the Philistine, and the LORD worked a great salvation for all Israel. You saw it, and rejoiced. Why then will you sin against innocent blood by killing David without cause?” He took his life in his hands when he killed the Philistine. The LORD won a great victory for all Israel, and you saw it and were glad. Why then would you do wrong to an innocent man like David by killing him for no reason?”
6 And Saul listened to the voice of Jonathan, and Saul swore, “As YHWH lives, he shall not be killed.” And Saul listened to the voice of Jonathan. Saul swore, “As the LORD lives, he shall not be put to death.” Saul listened to Jonathan and took this oath: “As surely as the LORD lives, David will not be put to death.”
7 And Jonathan called David, and Jonathan told him all these things. And Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he was before his face, as before heretofore. And Jonathan called David, and Jonathan reported to him all these things. And Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he was in his presence as before. So Jonathan called David and told him the whole conversation. He brought him to Saul, and David was with Saul as before.
8 And it added to be war, and David went out and fought with the Philistines, and he struck them with a mighty blow, and they fled from his face. And there was war again. And David went out and fought with the Philistines and struck them with a great blow, so that they fled before him. Once more war broke out, and David went out and fought the Philistines. He struck them with such force that they fled before him.
9 And a spirit of distress from YHWH came upon Saul, and he sat in his house, and his spear was in his hand, and David was playing by hand. Then a harmful spirit from the LORD came upon Saul, as he sat in his house with his spear in his hand. And David was playing the lyre. But an evil spirit from the LORD came on Saul as he was sitting in his house with his spear in his hand. While David was playing the lyre,
10 And Saul sought to strike David with the spear and into the wall, and he slipped away from the face of Saul, and he drove the spear into the wall. And David fled and escaped in that night. And Saul sought to pin David to the wall with the spear, but he eluded Saul, so that he struck the spear into the wall. And David fled and escaped that night. Saul tried to pin him to the wall with his spear, but David eluded him as Saul drove the spear into the wall. That night David made good his escape.
11 And Saul sent messengers to the house of David to watch him and to kill him in the morning. And Michal his wife declared it to David, saying, “If you do not save your life tonight, tomorrow you will be killed.” Saul sent messengers to David’s house to watch him, that he might kill him in the morning. But Michal, David’s wife, told him, “If you do not escape with your life tonight, tomorrow you will be killed.” Saul sent men to David’s house to watch it and to kill him in the morning. But Michal, David’s wife, warned him, “If you don’t run for your life tonight, tomorrow you’ll be killed.”
12 And Michal let down David through a window, and he went and fled and escaped. So Michal let David down through the window, and he fled away and escaped. So Michal let David down through a window, and he fled and escaped.
13 And Michal took the teraphim and laid it in the bed, and she put a cover of goats’ hair for his head, and covered it with clothing. Michal took an image and laid it on the bed and put a pillow of goats’ hair at its head and covered it with the clothes. Then Michal took an idol and laid it on the bed, covering it with a garment and putting some goats’ hair at the head.
14 And Saul sent messengers to take David, and she said, “He is sick.” And when Saul sent messengers to take David, she said, “He is sick.” When Saul sent the men to capture David, Michal said, “He is ill.”
15 And Saul sent back the messengers to see David, saying, “Bring him up in the bed to me, that I may kill him.” Then Saul sent the messengers to see David, saying, “Bring him up to me in the bed, that I may kill him.” Then Saul sent the men back to see David and told them, “Bring him up to me in his bed so that I may kill him.”
16 And the messengers had come in, and there was the teraphim in the bed, and a cover of goats’ hair for his head. And when the messengers came in, behold, the image was in the bed, with the pillow of goats’ hair at its head. But when the men entered, there was the idol in the bed, and at the head was some goats’ hair.
17 And Saul said to Michal, “Why have you deceived me like this and sent away my enemy, so that he has escaped?” And Michal answered to Saul, “He said to me, ‘Let me go; why should I kill you?’” Saul said to Michal, “Why have you deceived me thus and let my enemy go, so that he has escaped?” And Michal answered Saul, “He said to me, ‘Let me go. Why should I kill you?’” Saul said to Michal, “Why did you deceive me like this and send my enemy away so that he escaped?” Michal told him, “He said to me, ‘Let me get away. Why should I kill you?’”
18 And David fled and escaped and went to Samuel at Ramah, and he told him all that Saul had done to him. And he and Samuel went and stayed in Naioth. Now David fled and escaped, and he came to Samuel at Ramah and told him all that Saul had done to him. And he and Samuel went and lived at Naioth. When David had fled and made his escape, he went to Samuel at Ramah and told him all that Saul had done to him. Then he and Samuel went to Naioth and stayed there.
19 And it was declared to Saul, saying, “Behold, David is in Naioth in Ramah.” And it was told Saul, “Behold, David is at Naioth in Ramah.” Word came to Saul: “David is in Naioth at Ramah|;
20 And Saul sent messengers to take David, and they saw the group of prophets prophesying and Samuel standing as leader over them, and the Spirit of God came upon the messengers of Saul, and they also prophesied. Then Saul sent messengers to take David, and when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing as head over them, the Spirit of God came upon the messengers of Saul, and they also prophesied. so he sent men to capture him. But when they saw a group of prophets prophesying, with Samuel standing there as their leader, the Spirit of God came on Saul’s men, and they also prophesied.
21 And was told Saul, and he sent other messengers and prophesied they likewise. And Saul added and sent messengers the third time, and prophesied they also. When it was told Saul, he sent other messengers, and they also prophesied. And Saul sent messengers again the third time, and they also prophesied. Saul was told about it, and he sent more men, and they prophesied too. Saul sent men a third time, and they also prophesied.
22 And he went also to Ramah, and he came to the great well that is at Sechu. And he asked and said, “Where are Samuel and David?” And one said, “Behold, in Naioth in Ramah.” Then he himself went to Ramah and came to the great well that is in Secu. And he asked, “Where are Samuel and David?” And one said, “Behold, they are at Naioth in Ramah.” Finally, he himself left for Ramah and went to the great cistern at Seku. And he asked, “Where are Samuel and David?” “Over in Naioth at Ramah,” they said.
23 And he went there to Naioth in Ramah, and the Spirit of God was upon him, even him, and he went, going on, and he prophesied until he came to Naioth in Ramah. And he went there to Naioth in Ramah. And the Spirit of God came upon him also, and as he went he prophesied until he came to Naioth in Ramah. So Saul went to Naioth at Ramah. But the Spirit of God came even on him, and he walked along prophesying until he came to Naioth.
24 And he also stripped off his clothes, and he prophesied in like manner before the face of Samuel, and he lay naked all that day and all the night. Upon thus they say, “Is Saul also among the prophets?” And he too stripped off his clothes, and he too prophesied before Samuel and lay naked all that day and all that night. Thus it is said, “Is Saul also among the prophets?” He stripped off his garments, and he too prophesied in Samuel’s presence. He lay naked all that day and all that night. This is why people say, “Is Saul also among the prophets?”
