They came up and encamped in Michmash, to the east of Beth-aven. | The Philistines assembled to fight Israel, with three thousand chariots, six thousand charioteers, and soldiers as numerous as the sand on the seashore. They went up and camped at Mikmash, east of Beth Aven.
| 6 | When the Israelites saw they were in trouble because the army was hard-pressed, they hid in caves, in thorny thickets, among rocks, in pits, and in cisterns. | When the men of Israel saw that they were in trouble (for the people were hard pressed), the people hid themselves in caves and in holes and in rocks and in tombs and in cisterns, | When the Israelites saw that their situation was critical and that their army was hard pressed, they hid in caves and thickets, among the rocks, and in pits and cisterns. | |

But Saul remained in Gilgal, and all the people who followed him trembled [in fear]. | and some Hebrews crossed the fords of the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. Saul was still at Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling. | Some Hebrews even crossed the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. Saul remained at Gilgal, and all the troops with him were quaking with fear.

But Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and the people were scattering from him. | He waited seven days, the time set by Samuel; but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and Saul’s men began to scatter.
| 9 | Then Saul said, |Bring me the animals for the burnt offering and the fellowship offerings.| So he sacrificed the burnt offering. | So Saul said, “Bring the burnt offering here to me, and the peace offerings.” And he offered the burnt offering. | So he said, “Bring me the burnt offering and the fellowship offerings.” And Saul offered up the burnt offering. | |
| 10 | As he finished sacrificing the burnt offering, Samuel came, and Saul went to greet him. | As soon as he had finished offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came. And Saul went out to meet him and greet him. | Just as he finished making the offering, Samuel arrived, and Saul went out to greet him. | |
| 11 | Samuel asked, |What have you done?| Saul replied, |I saw the troops were scattering. You didn't come when you said you would, and the Philistines were assembling at Michmash. | Samuel said, “What have you done?” And Saul said, “When I saw that the people were scattering from me, and that you did not come within the days appointed, and that the Philistines had mustered at Michmash, | “What have you done?” asked Samuel. Saul replied, “When I saw that the men were scattering, and that you did not come at the set time, and that the Philistines were assembling at Mikmash, | |
| 12 | So I thought, 'Now, the Philistines will come against me at Gilgal, but I haven't sought the LORD's favor.' I felt pressured into sacrificing the burnt offering.| | I said, ‘Now the Philistines will come down against me at Gilgal, and I have not sought the favor of the LORD.’ So I forced myself, and offered the burnt offering.” | I thought, ‘Now the Philistines will come down against me at Gilgal, and I have not sought the LORD’s favor.’ So I felt compelled to offer the burnt offering.” | |
| 13 | |You did a foolish thing,| Samuel told Saul. |You didn't follow the command of the LORD your God. [If you had,] the LORD would have established your kingdom over Israel permanently. | And Samuel said to Saul, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the command of the LORD your God, with which he commanded you. For then the LORD would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. | “You have done a foolish thing,” Samuel said. “You have not kept the command the LORD your God gave you; if you had, he would have established your kingdom over Israel for all time. | |
| 14 | But now your kingdom will not last. The LORD has searched for a man after his own heart. The LORD has appointed him as ruler of his people, because you didn't follow the command of the LORD.| | But now your kingdom shall not continue. The LORD has sought out a man after his own heart, and the LORD has commanded him to be prince over his people, because you have not kept what the LORD commanded you.” | But now your kingdom will not endure; the LORD has sought out a man after his own heart and appointed him ruler of his people, because you have not kept the LORD’s command.” | |
| 15 | Samuel left Gilgal. The rest of the people followed Saul to meet the soldiers. They went from Gilgal to Gibeah in Benjamin, where Saul counted the troops who were still with him-about 600 men. | And Samuel arose and went up from Gilgal. The rest of the people went up after Saul to meet the army; they went up from Gilgal to Gibeah of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people who were present with him, about six hundred men. | Then Samuel left Gilgal and went up to Gibeah in Benjamin, and Saul counted the men who were with him. | 20 | Everyone in Israel had to go to the Philistines to sharpen the blade of his plow, his mattock, ax, or sickle. | But every one of the Israelites went down to the Philistines to sharpen his plowshare, his mattock, his axe, or his sickle, | So all Israel went down to the Philistines to have their plow points, mattocks, axes and sickles sharpened. | |
| 21 | The price was a pim for plow blades and mattocks, and one-tenth of an ounce of silver to sharpen a mattock or set a metal point on a cattle-prod. | and the charge was two-thirds of a shekel for the plowshares and for the mattocks, and a third of a shekel for sharpening the axes and for setting the goads. | The price was two-thirds of a shekel for sharpening plow points and mattocks, and a third of a shekel for sharpening forks and axes and for repointing goads. | |
| 22 | So on the day of battle, not one sword or spear could be found among all the troops who were with Saul and Jonathan. But Saul and his son Jonathan had them. | So on the day of the battle there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people with Saul and Jonathan, but Saul and Jonathan his son had them. | So on the day of the battle not a soldier with Saul and Jonathan had a sword or spear in his hand; only Saul and his son Jonathan had them. | |
