1 In like manner, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, even if any obey not the word, they may without the word be gained by the behaviour of their wives; Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives,
2 beholding your chaste behaviour coupled with fear. when they see your respectful and pure conduct. when they see the purity and reverence of your lives.
3 Whose adorning let it not be the outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing jewels of gold, or of putting on apparel; Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes.
4 but let it be the hidden man of the heart, in the incorruptible apparel of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.
5 For after this manner aforetime the holy women also, who hoped in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection to their own husbands: For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands, For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves. They submitted themselves to their own husbands,
6 as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose children ye now are, if ye do well, and are not put in fear by any terror. as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. And you are her children, if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening. like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her lord. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear.
7 Ye husbands, in like manner, dwell with your wives according to knowledge, giving honour unto the woman, as unto the weaker vessel, as being also joint-heirs of the grace of life; to the end that your prayers be not hindered. Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered. Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.
8 Finally, be ye all likeminded, compassionate, loving as brethren, tenderhearted, humbleminded: Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble.
9 not rendering evil for evil, or reviling for reviling; but contrariwise blessing; for hereunto were ye called, that ye should inherit a blessing. Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing. Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.
10 For, He that would love life, And see good days, Let him refrain his tongue from evil, And his lips that they speak no guile: For “Whoever desires to love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit; For, “Whoever would love life and see good days must keep their tongue from evil and their lips from deceitful speech.
11 And let him turn away from evil, and do good; Let him seek peace, and pursue it. let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it. They must turn from evil and do good; they must seek peace and pursue it.
12 For the eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, And his ears unto their supplication: But the face of the Lord is upon them that do evil. For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.” For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”
13 And who is he that will harm you, if ye be zealous of that which is good? Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is good? Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good?
14 But and if ye should suffer for righteousness' sake, blessed are ye: and fear not their fear, neither be troubled; But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. “Do not fear their threats; do not be frightened.”
15 but sanctify in your hearts Christ as Lord: being ready always to give answer to every man that asketh you a reason concerning the hope that is in you, yet with meekness and fear: but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,
16 having a good conscience; that, wherein ye are spoken against, they may be put to shame who revile your good manner of life in Christ. having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame. keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.
17 For it is better, if the will of God should so will, that ye suffer for well-doing than for evil-doing. For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God’s will, than for doing evil. For it is better, if it is God’s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.
18 Because Christ also suffered for sins once, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God; being put to death in the flesh, but quickened in the spirit; For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
22 who is on the right hand of God, having gone into heaven; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him. who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him. who has gone into heaven and is at God’s right hand—with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.
