I would not have you ignorant, my brethren, that all our fathers were under the Cloud, all passed thro' the sea: For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea.
and were all baptized into the Mosaical institution by the cloud, and by the sea; and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea.
they all eat the same spiritual meat, and all ate the same spiritual food, They all ate the same spiritual food
and all drank the same spiritual drink: (for they drank of what flowed from the spiritual rock: and that rock was Christ.) and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ. and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ.
but with the greater part God was not well pleased: for their carcasses were strown in the wilderness. Nevertheless, with most of them God was not pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness. Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.
now these things were examples to deter us from longing after things that are pernicious, as they did. Now these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as they did. Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did.
be not idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written, "the people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play." Do not be idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.” Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written: “The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.”
neither let us commit fornication, as some of them did, of whom three and twenty thousand fell in one day. We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in a single day. We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did—and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died.
neither let us provoke Christ as some of them provoked him, and were destroyed by serpents. We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did and were destroyed by serpents, We should not test Christ, as some of them did—and were killed by snakes.
neither murmur ye, as some of them murmured, and were slain by the destroying angel. nor grumble, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer. And do not grumble, as some of them did—and were killed by the destroying angel.
All these things happened to them for examples: and are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages are come. Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come. These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the culmination of the ages has come.
wherefore let him that thinks he stands firm, take heed lest he fall. Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!
you have met with no trials yet, but such as are common to men: and God who is faithful, will not suffer you to be tempted above your strength; but will with the temptation make a way to escape, by enabling you to bear it. No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
wherefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry. Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry. Therefore, my dear friends, flee from idolatry.
I speak as to knowing men: be you your selves the judges of what I say. I speak as to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say. I speak to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say.
the cup of benediction which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? the bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ?
for the bread being one, as many as we are, we are one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread. Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread. Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all share the one loaf.
consider the custom of the Jews by descent, are not they which eat of the sacrifices, partakers of the altar? what say I then? Consider the people of Israel: are not those who eat the sacrifices participants in the altar? Consider the people of Israel: Do not those who eat the sacrifices participate in the altar?
that the idol, or that what is offered in sacrifice to the idol, is a matter of consequence? What do I imply then? That food offered to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything? Do I mean then that food sacrificed to an idol is anything, or that an idol is anything?
no, but that what the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons, and not to God: and I would not have you partake of the sacrifices of demons. No, I imply that what pagans sacrifice they offer to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be participants with demons. No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God, and I do not want you to be participants with demons.
you should not drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of demons: you should not be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of demons. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot have a part in both the Lord’s table and the table of demons.
Shall we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he? Shall we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he? Are we trying to arouse the Lord’s jealousy? Are we stronger than he?
are all things lawful for me? yet all things are not expedient: are all things lawful for me? yet all things do not edify. “All things are lawful,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful,” but not all things build up. “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything|—but not everything is constructive.
Let no man consult barely his own interest: but every man that of others. Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbor. No one should seek their own good, but the good of others.
whatever is sold in the shambles, that eat, without making any scrupulous enquiry. Eat whatever is sold in the meat market without raising any question on the ground of conscience. Eat anything sold in the meat market without raising questions of conscience,
for the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof. For “the earth is the Lord’s, and the fullness thereof.” for, “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.”
if any of the unbelievers invite you to an entertainment, and you are disposed to go; whatever is set before you, eat, without asking any question out of a scruple of conscience. If one of the unbelievers invites you to dinner and you are disposed to go, eat whatever is set before you without raising any question on the ground of conscience. If an unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat whatever is put before you without raising questions of conscience.
but if any man say to you, this is offered in sacrifice to an idol, don't eat, for his sake that mentioned it, and for conscience sake. But if someone says to you, “This has been offered in sacrifice,” then do not eat it, for the sake of the one who informed you, and for the sake of conscience— But if someone says to you, “This has been offered in sacrifice,” then do not eat it, both for the sake of the one who told you and for the sake of conscience.
when I say conscience, I don't mean your own, but that of the other: for why should I expose my liberty to the censure of another man's conscience? I do not mean your conscience, but his. For why should my liberty be determined by someone else’s conscience? I am referring to the other person’s conscience, not yours. For why is my freedom being judged by another’s conscience?
if I am thankful for what I have, why should I chuse to be evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks? If I partake with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of that for which I give thanks? If I take part in the meal with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of something I thank God for?
whether therefore you eat or drink, or whatsoever you do, do all to the glory of God. So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
give no offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God. Give no offense to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God, Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God—
thus I endeavour to be acceptable to all men in all things, not seeking my own advantage, but that of others, so as they may be saved. just as I try to please everyone in everything I do, not seeking my own advantage, but that of many, that they may be saved. even as I try to please everyone in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved.
