1 Now I do not want you to be ignorant, brothers, of the fact that all of our ancestors who left Egypt were under the cloud. They all went through the sea, For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea.
2 and they all were immersed into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea.
3 They all ate the same spiritual food and all ate the same spiritual food, They all ate the same spiritual food
4 and drank the same spiritual drink, for they drank from the spiritual rock that went with them. That rock was the Messiah. and all drank the same spiritual drink. 6 Now their experiences serve as examples for us so that we won't set our hearts on evil as they did. Now these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as they did. Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did.
7 Let's stop being idolaters, as some of them were. As it is written, |The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to play.| Do not be idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.” Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written: “The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.”
8 Let's stop sinning sexually, as some of them were doing, and on a single day 23,000 fell dead. We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in a single day. We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did—and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died.
9 Let's stop putting the Lord to the test, as some of them were doing, and were destroyed by snakes. We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did and were destroyed by serpents, We should not test Christ, as some of them did—and were killed by snakes.
10 You must stop complaining, as some of them were doing, and were annihilated by the destroyer. nor grumble, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer. And do not grumble, as some of them did—and were killed by the destroying angel.
11 These things happened to them to serve as an example, and they were written down as a warning for us in whom the culmination of the ages has been attained. Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come. These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the culmination of the ages has come.
12 Therefore, whoever thinks he is standing securely should watch out so he doesn't fall. Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!
13 No temptation has overtaken you that is unusual for human beings. But God is faithful, and he will not allow you to be tempted beyond your strength. Instead, along with the temptation he will also provide a way out, so that you may be able to endure it. No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
14 And so, my dear friends, keep on running away from idolatry. Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry. Therefore, my dear friends, flee from idolatry.
15 I am talking to sensible people. Apply what I am saying to yourselves. I speak as to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say. I speak to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say.
16 The cup of blessing that we bless is our fellowship in the blood of the Messiah, isn't it? The bread that we break is our fellowship in the body of the Messiah, isn't it? The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ?
17 Because there is one loaf, we who are many are one body, because all of us eat from the same loaf. Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread. Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all share the one loaf.
18 Look at the Israelis from a human point of view. Those who eat the sacrifices share in what is on the altar, don't they? Consider the people of Israel: are not those who eat the sacrifices participants in the altar? Consider the people of Israel: Do not those who eat the sacrifices participate in the altar?
19 Am I suggesting that an offering made to idols means anything, or that an idol itself means anything? What do I imply then? That food offered to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything? Do I mean then that food sacrificed to an idol is anything, or that an idol is anything?
20 Hardly! What they offer, they offer to demons and not to God, and I do not want you to become partners with demons. No, I imply that what pagans sacrifice they offer to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be participants with demons. No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God, and I do not want you to be participants with demons.
21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot dine with the Lord and dine with demons, You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot have a part in both the Lord’s table and the table of demons.
22 or you'll provoke the Lord to jealousy, won't you? Are we stronger than he is? Shall we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he? Are we trying to arouse the Lord’s jealousy? Are we stronger than he?
23 Everything is permissible, but not everything is helpful. Everything is permissible, but not everything builds up. “All things are lawful,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful,” but not all things build up. “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything|—but not everything is constructive.
24 No one should seek his own welfare, but rather his neighbor's. Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbor. No one should seek their own good, but the good of others.
25 Eat anything that is sold in the meat market without raising any question about it on the grounds of conscience, Eat whatever is sold in the meat market without raising any question on the ground of conscience. Eat anything sold in the meat market without raising questions of conscience,

27 If an unbeliever invites you to his house and you wish to go, eat whatever is set before you, raising no question on the grounds of conscience. If one of the unbelievers invites you to dinner and you are disposed to go, eat whatever is set before you without raising any question on the ground of conscience. If an unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat whatever is put before you without raising questions of conscience.
28 However, if someone says to you, |This was offered as a sacrifice,| don't eat it, both out of consideration for the one who told you and also for the sake of conscience. But if someone says to you, “This has been offered in sacrifice,” then do not eat it, for the sake of the one who informed you, and for the sake of conscience— But if someone says to you, “This has been offered in sacrifice,” then do not eat it, both for the sake of the one who told you and for the sake of conscience.
29 I mean, of course, his conscience, not yours. For why should my freedom be determined by someone else's conscience? I do not mean your conscience, but his. For why should my liberty be determined by someone else’s conscience? I am referring to the other person’s conscience, not yours. For why is my freedom being judged by another’s conscience?
30 If I eat with thankfulness, why should I be denounced because of what I am thankful for? If I partake with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of that for which I give thanks? If I take part in the meal with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of something I thank God for?
31 Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God. So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
32 Don't become a stumbling block to Jews or Greeks or to the church of God, Give no offense to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God, Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God—
33 just as I myself try to please everybody in every way. I don't look out for my own benefit, but rather for the benefit of many people, so that they might be saved. just as I try to please everyone in everything I do, not seeking my own advantage, but that of many, that they may be saved. even as I try to please everyone in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved.
