And it comes to pass as David sat in his house, that David says to Nathan the prophet, “Behold, I am dwelling in a house of cedars, and the Ark of the Covenant of YHWH [is] under curtains”; | Now when David lived in his house, David said to Nathan the prophet, “Behold, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of the covenant of the LORD is under a tent.” | After David was settled in his palace, he said to Nathan the prophet, “Here I am, living in a house of cedar, while the ark of the covenant of the LORD is under a tent.” |
and Nathan says to David, “All that [is] in your heart do, for God [is] with you.” | And Nathan said to David, “Do all that is in your heart, for God is with you.” | Nathan replied to David, “Whatever you have in mind, do it, for God is with you.” |
And it comes to pass on that night that a word of God is to Nathan, saying, | But that same night the word of the LORD came to Nathan, | But that night the word of God came to Nathan, saying: |
“Go, and you have said to My servant David, Thus said YHWH: You do not build for Me the house to dwell in. | “Go and tell my servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD: It is not you who will build me a house to dwell in. | “Go and tell my servant David, ‘This is what the LORD says: You are not the one to build me a house to dwell in. |
For I have not dwelt in a house from the day that I brought up Israel until this day, and I am [going] from tent to tent, and from the Dwelling Place. | For I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up Israel to this day, but I have gone from tent to tent and from dwelling to dwelling. | I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought Israel up out of Egypt to this day. I have moved from one tent site to another, from one dwelling place to another. |
Wherever I have walked up and down among all Israel, have I spoken a word with one of [the] judges of Israel, whom I commanded to feed My people, saying, Why have you not built a house of cedars for Me? | In all places where I have moved with all Israel, did I speak a word with any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people, saying, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?”’ | Wherever I have moved with all the Israelites, did I ever say to any of their leaders whom I commanded to shepherd my people, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?|’ |
And now, thus you say to My servant, to David, Thus said YHWH of Hosts: I have taken you from the habitation, from after the sheep, to be leader over My people Israel, | Now, therefore, thus shall you say to my servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts, I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, to be prince over my people Israel, | “Now then, tell my servant David, ‘This is what the LORD Almighty says: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock, and appointed you ruler over my people Israel. |
and I am with you wherever you have walked, and I cut off all your enemies from your presence, and have made a name for you like the name of the great ones who [are] in the earth. | and I have been with you wherever you have gone and have cut off all your enemies from before you. And I will make for you a name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. | I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make your name like the names of the greatest men on earth. |
And I have prepared a place for My people Israel, and planted it, and it has dwelt in its place, and is not troubled anymore, and the sons of perverseness do not add to wear it out as at first, | And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, that they may dwell in their own place and be disturbed no more. And violent men shall waste them no more, as formerly, | And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed. Wicked people will not oppress them anymore, as they did at the beginning |
indeed, even from the days that I appointed judges over My people Israel. And I have humbled all your enemies, and I declare to you that YHWH builds a house for you. | from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. And I will subdue all your enemies. Moreover, I declare to you that the LORD will build you a house. | and have done ever since the time I appointed leaders over my people Israel. I will also subdue all your enemies. “’I declare to you that the LORD will build a house for you: |
And it has come to pass, when your days have been fulfilled to go with your fathers, that I have raised up your seed after you, who is of your sons, and I have established his kingdom; | When your days are fulfilled to walk with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, one of your own sons, and I will establish his kingdom. | When your days are over and you go to be with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, one of your own sons, and I will establish his kingdom. |
he builds a house for Me, and I have established his throne for all time; | He shall build a house for me, and I will establish his throne forever. | He is the one who will build a house for me, and I will establish his throne forever. |
I am to him for a father, and he is to Me for a son, and I do not turn aside My kindness from him as I turned it aside from him who was before you, | I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. I will not take my steadfast love from him, as I took it from him who was before you, | I will be his father, and he will be my son. I will never take my love away from him, as I took it away from your predecessor. |
and I have established him in My house, and in My kingdom for all time, and his throne is established for all time.” | but I will confirm him in my house and in my kingdom forever, and his throne shall be established forever.’” | I will set him over my house and my kingdom forever; his throne will be established forever.’” |
According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so spoke Nathan to David. | In accordance with all these words, and in accordance with all this vision, Nathan spoke to David. | Nathan reported to David all the words of this entire revelation. |
And David the king comes in and sits before YHWH, and says, “Who [am] I, O YHWH God, and what [is] my house, that You have brought me here? | Then King David went in and sat before the LORD and said, “Who am I, O LORD God, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far? | Then King David went in and sat before the LORD, and he said: “Who am I, LORD God, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? |
And this is small in Your eyes, O God, and You speak concerning the house of Your servant far off, and have seen me as a type of the man who is on high, O YHWH God! | And this was a small thing in your eyes, O God. You have also spoken of your servant’s house for a great while to come, and have shown me future generations, O LORD God! | And as if this were not enough in your sight, my God, you have spoken about the future of the house of your servant. You, LORD God, have looked on me as though I were the most exalted of men. |
What more does David add to You for the honor of Your servant; and You have known Your servant. | And what more can David say to you for honoring your servant? For you know your servant. | “What more can David say to you for honoring your servant? For you know your servant, |
O YHWH, for Your servant’s sake, and according to Your own heart You have done all this greatness, to make known all these great things. | For your servant’s sake, O LORD, and according to your own heart, you have done all this greatness, in making known all these great things. | LORD. For the sake of your servant and according to your will, you have done this great thing and made known all these great promises. |
O YHWH, there is none like You, and there is no god except You, according to all that we have heard with our ears. | There is none like you, O LORD, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears. | “There is no one like you, LORD, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears. |
And who [is] as Your people Israel, one nation in the earth whom God has gone to ransom to Himself for a people, to make a great and fearful name for Yourself, to cast out nations from the presence of Your people whom You have ransomed out of Egypt? | And who is like your people Israel, the one nation on earth whom God went to redeem to be his people, making for yourself a name for great and awesome things, in driving out nations before your people whom you redeemed from Egypt? | And who is like your people Israel—the one nation on earth whose God went out to redeem a people for himself, and to make a name for yourself, and to perform great and awesome wonders by driving out nations from before your people, whom you redeemed from Egypt? |
Indeed, You appoint Your people Israel to Yourself for a people for all time, and You, O YHWH, have been to them for God. | And you made your people Israel to be your people forever, and you, O LORD, became their God. | You made your people Israel your very own forever, and you, LORD, have become their God. |
And now, O YHWH, let the word that You have spoken concerning Your servant, and concerning his house, be steadfast for all time, and do as You have spoken; | And now, O LORD, let the word that you have spoken concerning your servant and concerning his house be established forever, and do as you have spoken, | “And now, LORD, let the promise you have made concerning your servant and his house be established forever. Do as you promised, |
and let it be steadfast, and Your Name is great for all time, saying, YHWH of Hosts, God of Israel, [is] God to Israel, and the house of Your servant David is established before You; | and your name will be established and magnified forever, saying, ‘The LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, is Israel’s God,’ and the house of your servant David will be established before you. | so that it will be established and that your name will be great forever. Then people will say, ‘The LORD Almighty, the God over Israel, is Israel’s God!’ And the house of your servant David will be established before you. |
for You, O my God, have uncovered the ear of Your servant—to build a house for him, therefore Your servant has found [desire] to pray before You. | For you, my God, have revealed to your servant that you will build a house for him. Therefore your servant has found courage to pray before you. | “You, my God, have revealed to your servant that you will build a house for him. So your servant has found courage to pray to you. |
And now, YHWH, You [are] God Himself, and You speak this goodness concerning Your servant; | And now, O LORD, you are God, and you have promised this good thing to your servant. | You, LORD, are God! You have promised these good things to your servant. |
and now, You have been pleased to bless the house of Your servant, to be before You for all time; for You, O YHWH, have blessed, and it is blessed for all time.” | Now you have been pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever before you, for it is you, O LORD, who have blessed, and it is blessed forever.” | Now you have been pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever in your sight; for you, LORD, have blessed it, and it will be blessed forever.” |
