New Living Translation | New International Version |
Oh, the joys of those who are kind to the poor! The LORD rescues them when they are in trouble. | 1For the director of music. A psalm of David. Blessed are those who have regard for the weak; the LORD delivers them in times of trouble. |
The LORD protects them and keeps them alive. He gives them prosperity in the land and rescues them from their enemies. | 2The LORD protects and preserves them-- they are counted among the blessed in the land-- he does not give them over to the desire of their foes. |
The LORD nurses them when they are sick and restores them to health. | 3The LORD sustains them on their sickbed and restores them from their bed of illness. |
“O LORD,” I prayed, “have mercy on me. Heal me, for I have sinned against you.” | 4I said, "Have mercy on me, LORD; heal me, for I have sinned against you." |
But my enemies say nothing but evil about me. “How soon will he die and be forgotten?” they ask. | 5My enemies say of me in malice, "When will he die and his name perish?" |
They visit me as if they were my friends, but all the while they gather gossip, and when they leave, they spread it everywhere. | 6When one of them comes to see me, he speaks falsely, while his heart gathers slander; then he goes out and spreads it around. |
All who hate me whisper about me, imagining the worst. | 7All my enemies whisper together against me; they imagine the worst for me, saying, |
“He has some fatal disease,” they say. “He will never get out of that bed!” | 8"A vile disease has afflicted him; he will never get up from the place where he lies." |
Even my best friend, the one I trusted completely, the one who shared my food, has turned against me. | 9Even my close friend, someone I trusted, one who shared my bread, has turned against me. |
LORD, have mercy on me. Make me well again, so I can pay them back! | 10But may you have mercy on me, LORD; raise me up, that I may repay them. |
I know you are pleased with me, for you have not let my enemies triumph over me. | 11I know that you are pleased with me, for my enemy does not triumph over me. |
You have preserved my life because I am innocent; you have brought me into your presence forever. | 12Because of my integrity you uphold me and set me in your presence forever. |
Praise the LORD, the God of Israel, who lives from everlasting to everlasting. Amen and amen! | 13Praise be to the LORD, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. Amen and Amen. |
