New Living TranslationNew International Version
Early on Sunday morning, as the new day was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went out to visit the tomb.1After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.
Suddenly there was a great earthquake! For an angel of the Lord came down from heaven, rolled aside the stone, and sat on it.2There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it.
His face shone like lightning, and his clothing was as white as snow.3His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow.
The guards shook with fear when they saw him, and they fell into a dead faint.4The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.
Then the angel spoke to the women. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I know you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified.5The angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified.
He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead, just as he said would happen. Come, see where his body was lying.6He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.
And now, go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and he is going ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there. Remember what I have told you.”7Then go quickly and tell his disciples: 'He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.' Now I have told you."
The women ran quickly from the tomb. They were very frightened but also filled with great joy, and they rushed to give the disciples the angel’s message.8So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples.
And as they went, Jesus met them and greeted them. And they ran to him, grasped his feet, and worshiped him.9Suddenly Jesus met them. "Greetings," he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him.
Then Jesus said to them, “Don’t be afraid! Go tell my brothers to leave for Galilee, and they will see me there.” The Report of the Guard10Then Jesus said to them, "Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me."
As the women were on their way, some of the guards went into the city and told the leading priests what had happened.11While the women were on their way, some of the guards went into the city and reported to the chief priests everything that had happened.
A meeting with the elders was called, and they decided to give the soldiers a large bribe.12When the chief priests had met with the elders and devised a plan, they gave the soldiers a large sum of money,
They told the soldiers, “You must say, ‘Jesus’ disciples came during the night while we were sleeping, and they stole his body.’13telling them, "You are to say, 'His disciples came during the night and stole him away while we were asleep.'
If the governor hears about it, we’ll stand up for you so you won’t get in trouble.”14If this report gets to the governor, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble."
So the guards accepted the bribe and said what they were told to say. Their story spread widely among the Jews, and they still tell it today. The Great Commission15So the soldiers took the money and did as they were instructed. And this story has been widely circulated among the Jews to this very day.
Then the eleven disciples left for Galilee, going to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go.16Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go.
When they saw him, they worshiped him—but some of them doubted!17When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted.
Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth.18Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”20and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
