New Living TranslationNew International Version
When David was an old man, he appointed his son Solomon to be king over Israel.1When David was old and full of years, he made his son Solomon king over Israel.
David summoned all the leaders of Israel, together with the priests and Levites.2He also gathered together all the leaders of Israel, as well as the priests and Levites.
All the Levites who were thirty years old or older were counted, and the total came to 38,000.3The Levites thirty years old or more were counted, and the total number of men was thirty-eight thousand.
Then David said, “From all the Levites, 24,000 will supervise the work at the Temple of the LORD. Another 6,000 will serve as officials and judges.4David said, "Of these, twenty-four thousand are to be in charge of the work of the temple of the LORD and six thousand are to be officials and judges.
Another 4,000 will work as gatekeepers, and 4,000 will praise the LORD with the musical instruments I have made.”5Four thousand are to be gatekeepers and four thousand are to praise the LORD with the musical instruments I have provided for that purpose."
Then David divided the Levites into divisions named after the clans descended from the three sons of Levi—Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. The Gershonites6David separated the Levites into divisions corresponding to the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath and Merari.
The Gershonite family units were defined by their lines of descent from Libni and Shimei, the sons of Gershon.7Belonging to the Gershonites: Ladan and Shimei.
Three of the descendants of Libni were Jehiel (the family leader), Zetham, and Joel.8The sons of Ladan: Jehiel the first, Zetham and Joel--three in all.
These were the leaders of the family of Libni. Three of the descendants of Shimei were Shelomoth, Haziel, and Haran.9The sons of Shimei: Shelomoth, Haziel and Haran--three in all. These were the heads of the families of Ladan.
Four other descendants of Shimei were Jahath, Ziza, Jeush, and Beriah.10And the sons of Shimei: Jahath, Ziza, Jeush and Beriah. These were the sons of Shimei--four in all.
Jahath was the family leader, and Ziza was next. Jeush and Beriah were counted as a single family because neither had many sons. The Kohathites11Jahath was the first and Ziza the second, but Jeush and Beriah did not have many sons; so they were counted as one family with one assignment.
Four of the descendants of Kohath were Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel.12The sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel--four in all.
The sons of Amram were Aaron and Moses. Aaron and his descendants were set apart to dedicate the most holy things, to offer sacrifices in the LORD’s presence, to serve the LORD, and to pronounce blessings in his name forever.13The sons of Amram: Aaron and Moses. Aaron was set apart, he and his descendants forever, to consecrate the most holy things, to offer sacrifices before the LORD, to minister before him and to pronounce blessings in his name forever.
As for Moses, the man of God, his sons were included with the tribe of Levi.14The sons of Moses the man of God were counted as part of the tribe of Levi.
The sons of Moses were Gershom and Eliezer.15The sons of Moses: Gershom and Eliezer.
The descendants of Gershom included Shebuel, the family leader.16The descendants of Gershom: Shubael was the first.
Eliezer had only one son, Rehabiah, the family leader. Rehabiah had numerous descendants.17The descendants of Eliezer: Rehabiah was the first. Eliezer had no other sons, but the sons of Rehabiah were very numerous.
The descendants of Izhar included Shelomith, the family leader.18The sons of Izhar: Shelomith was the first.
The descendants of Hebron included Jeriah (the family leader), Amariah (the second), Jahaziel (the third), and Jekameam (the fourth).19The sons of Hebron: Jeriah the first, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third and Jekameam the fourth.
The descendants of Uzziel included Micah (the family leader) and Isshiah (the second). The Merarites20The sons of Uzziel: Micah the first and Ishiah the second.
The descendants of Merari included Mahli and Mushi. The sons of Mahli were Eleazar and Kish.21The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. The sons of Mahli: Eleazar and Kish.
Eleazar died with no sons, only daughters. His daughters married their cousins, the sons of Kish.22Eleazar died without having sons: he had only daughters. Their cousins, the sons of Kish, married them.
Three of the descendants of Mushi were Mahli, Eder, and Jerimoth.23The sons of Mushi: Mahli, Eder and Jerimoth--three in all.
These were the descendants of Levi by clans, the leaders of their family groups, registered carefully by name. Each had to be twenty years old or older to qualify for service in the house of the LORD.24These were the descendants of Levi by their families--the heads of families as they were registered under their names and counted individually, that is, the workers twenty years old or more who served in the temple of the LORD.
For David said, “The LORD, the God of Israel, has given us peace, and he will always live in Jerusalem.25For David had said, "Since the LORD, the God of Israel, has granted rest to his people and has come to dwell in Jerusalem forever,
Now the Levites will no longer need to carry the Tabernacle and its furnishings from place to place.”26the Levites no longer need to carry the tabernacle or any of the articles used in its service."
In accordance with David’s final instructions, all the Levites twenty years old or older were registered for service.27According to the last instructions of David, the Levites were counted from those twenty years old or more.
The work of the Levites was to assist the priests, the descendants of Aaron, as they served at the house of the LORD. They also took care of the courtyards and side rooms, helped perform the ceremonies of purification, and served in many other ways in the house of God.28The duty of the Levites was to help Aaron's descendants in the service of the temple of the LORD: to be in charge of the courtyards, the side rooms, the purification of all sacred things and the performance of other duties at the house of God.
They were in charge of the sacred bread that was set out on the table, the choice flour for the grain offerings, the wafers made without yeast, the cakes cooked in olive oil, and the other mixed breads. They were also responsible to check all the weights and measures.29They were in charge of the bread set out on the table, the special flour for the grain offerings, the thin loaves made without yeast, the baking and the mixing, and all measurements of quantity and size.
And each morning and evening they stood before the LORD to sing songs of thanks and praise to him.30They were also to stand every morning to thank and praise the LORD. They were to do the same in the evening
They assisted with the burnt offerings that were presented to the LORD on Sabbath days, at new moon celebrations, and at all the appointed festivals. The required number of Levites served in the LORD’s presence at all times, following all the procedures they had been given.31and whenever burnt offerings were presented to the LORD on the Sabbaths, at the New Moon feasts and at the appointed festivals. They were to serve before the LORD regularly in the proper number and in the way prescribed for them.
And so, under the supervision of the priests, the Levites watched over the Tabernacle and the Temple and faithfully carried out their duties of service at the house of the LORD.32And so the Levites carried out their responsibilities for the tent of meeting, for the Holy Place and, under their relatives the descendants of Aaron, for the service of the temple of the LORD.
