New Living Translation | New American Standard Bible 1995 |
“Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. | 1"Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. |
There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? | 2"In My Father's house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. |
When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am. | 3"If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also. |
And you know the way to where I am going.” | 4"And you know the way where I am going." |
“No, we don’t know, Lord,” Thomas said. “We have no idea where you are going, so how can we know the way?” | 5Thomas said to Him, "Lord, we do not know where You are going, how do we know the way?" |
Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. | 6Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me. |
If you had really known me, you would know who my Father is. From now on, you do know him and have seen him!” | 7"If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; from now on you know Him, and have seen Him." |
Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.” | 8Philip said to Him, "Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us." |
Jesus replied, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and yet you still don’t know who I am? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father! So why are you asking me to show him to you? | 9Jesus said to him, "Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; how can you say, 'Show us the Father '? |
Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words I speak are not my own, but my Father who lives in me does his work through me. | 10"Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on My own initiative, but the Father abiding in Me does His works. |
Just believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me. Or at least believe because of the work you have seen me do. | 11"Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me; otherwise believe because of the works themselves. |
“I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father. | 12"Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I go to the Father. |
You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it, so that the Son can bring glory to the Father. | 13"Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. |
Yes, ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it! Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit | 14"If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it. |
“If you love me, obey my commandments. | 15"If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. |
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. | 16"I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; |
He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you. | 17that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you. |
No, I will not abandon you as orphans—I will come to you. | 18"I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. |
Soon the world will no longer see me, but you will see me. Since I live, you also will live. | 19"After a little while the world will no longer see Me, but you will see Me; because I live, you will live also. |
When I am raised to life again, you will know that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. | 20"In that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you. |
Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them. And I will love them and reveal myself to each of them.” | 21"He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will disclose Myself to him." |
Judas (not Judas Iscariot, but the other disciple with that name) said to him, “Lord, why are you going to reveal yourself only to us and not to the world at large?” | 22Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him, "Lord, what then has happened that You are going to disclose Yourself to us and not to the world?" |
Jesus replied, “All who love me will do what I say. My Father will love them, and we will come and make our home with each of them. | 23Jesus answered and said to him, "If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him. |
Anyone who doesn’t love me will not obey me. And remember, my words are not my own. What I am telling you is from the Father who sent me. | 24"He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father's who sent Me. |
I am telling you these things now while I am still with you. | 25"These things I have spoken to you while abiding with you. |
But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you. | 26"But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you. |
“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid. | 27"Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful. |
Remember what I told you: I am going away, but I will come back to you again. If you really loved me, you would be happy that I am going to the Father, who is greater than I am. | 28"You heard that I said to you, 'I go away, and I will come to you.' If you loved Me, you would have rejoiced because I go to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. |
I have told you these things before they happen so that when they do happen, you will believe. | 29"Now I have told you before it happens, so that when it happens, you may believe. |
“I don’t have much more time to talk to you, because the ruler of this world approaches. He has no power over me, | 30"I will not speak much more with you, for the ruler of the world is coming, and he has nothing in Me; |
but I will do what the Father requires of me, so that the world will know that I love the Father. Come, let’s be going. | 31but so that the world may know that I love the Father, I do exactly as the Father commanded Me. Get up, let us go from here. |
