| 1So we must listen very carefully to the truth we have heard, or we may drift away from it. | 1Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip. |
| 2For the message God delivered through angels has always stood firm, and every violation of the law and every act of disobedience was punished. | 2For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward; |
| 3So what makes us think we can escape if we ignore this great salvation that was first announced by the Lord Jesus himself and then delivered to us by those who heard him speak? | 3How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him; |
| 4And God confirmed the message by giving signs and wonders and various miracles and gifts of the Holy Spirit whenever he chose. Jesus, the Man | 4God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will? |
| 5And furthermore, it is not angels who will control the future world we are talking about. | 5For unto the angels hath he not put in subjection the world to come, whereof we speak. |
| 6For in one place the Scriptures say, “What are mere mortals that you should think about them, or a son of man that you should care for him? | 6But one in a certain place testified, saying, What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man, that thou visitest him? |
| 7Yet for a little while you made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor. | 7Thou madest him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honour, and didst set him over the works of thy hands: |
| 8You gave them authority over all things.” Now when it says “all things,” it means nothing is left out. But we have not yet seen all things put under their authority. | 8Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him. |
| 9What we do see is Jesus, who for a little while was given a position “a little lower than the angels”; and because he suffered death for us, he is now “crowned with glory and honor.” Yes, by God’s grace, Jesus tasted death for everyone. | 9But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man. |
| 10God, for whom and through whom everything was made, chose to bring many children into glory. And it was only right that he should make Jesus, through his suffering, a perfect leader, fit to bring them into their salvation. | 10For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings. |
| 11So now Jesus and the ones he makes holy have the same Father. That is why Jesus is not ashamed to call them his brothers and sisters. | 11For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren, |
| 12For he said to God, “I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters. I will praise you among your assembled people.” | 12Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee. |
| 13He also said, “I will put my trust in him,” that is, “I and the children God has given me.” | 13And again, I will put my trust in him. And again, Behold I and the children which God hath given me. |
| 14Because God’s children are human beings—made of flesh and blood—the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who had the power of death. | 14Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; |
| 15Only in this way could he set free all who have lived their lives as slaves to the fear of dying. | 15And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. |
| 16We also know that the Son did not come to help angels; he came to help the descendants of Abraham. | 16For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham. |
| 17Therefore, it was necessary for him to be made in every respect like us, his brothers and sisters, so that he could be our merciful and faithful High Priest before God. Then he could offer a sacrifice that would take away the sins of the people. | 17Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. |
| 18Since he himself has gone through suffering and testing, he is able to help us when we are being tested. | 18For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted. |
