New Living Translation | King James Bible |
Then the people began to multiply on the earth, and daughters were born to them. | 1And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, |
The sons of God saw the beautiful women and took any they wanted as their wives. | 2That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. |
Then the LORD said, “My Spirit will not put up with humans for such a long time, for they are only mortal flesh. In the future, their normal lifespan will be no more than 120 years.” | 3And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. |
In those days, and for some time after, giant Nephilites lived on the earth, for whenever the sons of God had intercourse with women, they gave birth to children who became the heroes and famous warriors of ancient times. | 4There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown. |
The LORD observed the extent of human wickedness on the earth, and he saw that everything they thought or imagined was consistently and totally evil. | 5And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. |
So the LORD was sorry he had ever made them and put them on the earth. It broke his heart. | 6And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. |
And the LORD said, “I will wipe this human race I have created from the face of the earth. Yes, and I will destroy every living thing—all the people, the large animals, the small animals that scurry along the ground, and even the birds of the sky. I am sorry I ever made them.” | 7And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them. |
But Noah found favor with the LORD. The Story of Noah | 8But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD. |
This is the account of Noah and his family. Noah was a righteous man, the only blameless person living on earth at the time, and he walked in close fellowship with God. | 9These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God. |
Noah was the father of three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. | 10And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. |
Now God saw that the earth had become corrupt and was filled with violence. | 11The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. |
God observed all this corruption in the world, for everyone on earth was corrupt. | 12And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth. |
So God said to Noah, “I have decided to destroy all living creatures, for they have filled the earth with violence. Yes, I will wipe them all out along with the earth! | 13And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth. |
“Build a large boat from cypress wood and waterproof it with tar, inside and out. Then construct decks and stalls throughout its interior. | 14Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch. |
Make the boat 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high. | 15And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits. |
Leave an 18-inch opening below the roof all the way around the boat. Put the door on the side, and build three decks inside the boat—lower, middle, and upper. | 16A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it. |
“Look! I am about to cover the earth with a flood that will destroy every living thing that breathes. Everything on earth will die. | 17And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die. |
But I will confirm my covenant with you. So enter the boat—you and your wife and your sons and their wives. | 18But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons' wives with thee. |
Bring a pair of every kind of animal—a male and a female—into the boat with you to keep them alive during the flood. | 19And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female. |
Pairs of every kind of bird, and every kind of animal, and every kind of small animal that scurries along the ground, will come to you to be kept alive. | 20Of fowls after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive. |
And be sure to take on board enough food for your family and for all the animals.” | 21And take thou unto thee of all food that is eaten, and thou shalt gather it to thee; and it shall be for food for thee, and for them. |
So Noah did everything exactly as God had commanded him. | 22Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he. |
