New Living Translation | English Standard Version |
Then the people began to multiply on the earth, and daughters were born to them. | 1When man began to multiply on the face of the land and daughters were born to them, |
The sons of God saw the beautiful women and took any they wanted as their wives. | 2the sons of God saw that the daughters of man were attractive. And they took as their wives any they chose. |
Then the LORD said, “My Spirit will not put up with humans for such a long time, for they are only mortal flesh. In the future, their normal lifespan will be no more than 120 years.” | 3Then the LORD said, “My Spirit shall not abide in man forever, for he is flesh: his days shall be 120 years.” |
In those days, and for some time after, giant Nephilites lived on the earth, for whenever the sons of God had intercourse with women, they gave birth to children who became the heroes and famous warriors of ancient times. | 4The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown. |
The LORD observed the extent of human wickedness on the earth, and he saw that everything they thought or imagined was consistently and totally evil. | 5The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. |
So the LORD was sorry he had ever made them and put them on the earth. It broke his heart. | 6And the LORD regretted that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart. |
And the LORD said, “I will wipe this human race I have created from the face of the earth. Yes, and I will destroy every living thing—all the people, the large animals, the small animals that scurry along the ground, and even the birds of the sky. I am sorry I ever made them.” | 7So the LORD said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them.” |
But Noah found favor with the LORD. The Story of Noah | 8But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD. |
This is the account of Noah and his family. Noah was a righteous man, the only blameless person living on earth at the time, and he walked in close fellowship with God. | 9These are the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation. Noah walked with God. |
Noah was the father of three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. | 10And Noah had three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. |
Now God saw that the earth had become corrupt and was filled with violence. | 11Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight, and the earth was filled with violence. |
God observed all this corruption in the world, for everyone on earth was corrupt. | 12And God saw the earth, and behold, it was corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth. |
So God said to Noah, “I have decided to destroy all living creatures, for they have filled the earth with violence. Yes, I will wipe them all out along with the earth! | 13And God said to Noah, “I have determined to make an end of all flesh, for the earth is filled with violence through them. Behold, I will destroy them with the earth. |
“Build a large boat from cypress wood and waterproof it with tar, inside and out. Then construct decks and stalls throughout its interior. | 14Make yourself an ark of gopher wood. Make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and out with pitch. |
Make the boat 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high. | 15This is how you are to make it: the length of the ark 300 cubits, its breadth 50 cubits, and its height 30 cubits. |
Leave an 18-inch opening below the roof all the way around the boat. Put the door on the side, and build three decks inside the boat—lower, middle, and upper. | 16Make a roof for the ark, and finish it to a cubit above, and set the door of the ark in its side. Make it with lower, second, and third decks. |
“Look! I am about to cover the earth with a flood that will destroy every living thing that breathes. Everything on earth will die. | 17For behold, I will bring a flood of waters upon the earth to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life under heaven. Everything that is on the earth shall die. |
But I will confirm my covenant with you. So enter the boat—you and your wife and your sons and their wives. | 18But I will establish my covenant with you, and you shall come into the ark, you, your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives with you. |
Bring a pair of every kind of animal—a male and a female—into the boat with you to keep them alive during the flood. | 19And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every sort into the ark to keep them alive with you. They shall be male and female. |
Pairs of every kind of bird, and every kind of animal, and every kind of small animal that scurries along the ground, will come to you to be kept alive. | 20Of the birds according to their kinds, and of the animals according to their kinds, of every creeping thing of the ground, according to its kind, two of every sort shall come in to you to keep them alive. |
And be sure to take on board enough food for your family and for all the animals.” | 21Also take with you every sort of food that is eaten, and store it up. It shall serve as food for you and for them.” |
So Noah did everything exactly as God had commanded him. | 22Noah did this; he did all that God commanded him. |
