Then the people began to multiply on the earth, and daughters were born to them.1Now when men began to multiply on the face of the earth and daughters were born to them,
The sons of God saw the beautiful women and took any they wanted as their wives.2the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful, and they took as wives whomever they chose.
Then the LORD said, “My Spirit will not put up with humans for such a long time, for they are only mortal flesh. In the future, their normal lifespan will be no more than 120 years.”3So the LORD said, “My Spirit will not contend with man forever, for he is mortal; his days shall be 120 years.”
In those days, and for some time after, giant Nephilites lived on the earth, for whenever the sons of God had intercourse with women, they gave birth to children who became the heroes and famous warriors of ancient times.4The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and afterward as well—when the sons of God had relations with the daughters of men. And they bore them children who became the mighty men of old, men of renown.
The LORD observed the extent of human wickedness on the earth, and he saw that everything they thought or imagined was consistently and totally evil.5Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great upon the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was altogether evil all the time.
So the LORD was sorry he had ever made them and put them on the earth. It broke his heart.6And the LORD regretted that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.
And the LORD said, “I will wipe this human race I have created from the face of the earth. Yes, and I will destroy every living thing—all the people, the large animals, the small animals that scurry along the ground, and even the birds of the sky. I am sorry I ever made them.”7So the LORD said, “I will blot out man, whom I have created, from the face of the earth—every man and beast and crawling creature and bird of the air—for I am grieved that I have made them.”
But Noah found favor with the LORD. The Story of Noah8Noah, however, found favor in the eyes of the LORD.
This is the account of Noah and his family. Noah was a righteous man, the only blameless person living on earth at the time, and he walked in close fellowship with God.9This is the account of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation; Noah walked with God.
Noah was the father of three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.10And Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
Now God saw that the earth had become corrupt and was filled with violence.11Now the earth was corrupt in the sight of God, and full of violence.
God observed all this corruption in the world, for everyone on earth was corrupt.12And God looked upon the earth and saw that it was corrupt; for all living creatures on the earth had corrupted their ways.
So God said to Noah, “I have decided to destroy all living creatures, for they have filled the earth with violence. Yes, I will wipe them all out along with the earth!13Then God said to Noah, “The end of all living creatures has come before Me, because through them the earth is full of violence. Now behold, I will destroy both them and the earth.
“Build a large boat from cypress wood and waterproof it with tar, inside and out. Then construct decks and stalls throughout its interior.14Make for yourself an ark of gopher wood; make rooms in the ark and coat it with pitch inside and out.
Make the boat 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high.15And this is how you are to build it: The ark is to be 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high.
Leave an 18-inch opening below the roof all the way around the boat. Put the door on the side, and build three decks inside the boat—lower, middle, and upper.16You are to make a roof for the ark, finish its walls a cubit from the top, place a door in the side of the ark, and build lower, middle, and upper decks.
“Look! I am about to cover the earth with a flood that will destroy every living thing that breathes. Everything on earth will die.17And behold, I will bring floodwaters upon the earth to destroy every creature under the heavens that has the breath of life. Everything on the earth will perish.
But I will confirm my covenant with you. So enter the boat—you and your wife and your sons and their wives.18But I will establish My covenant with you, and you will enter the ark—you and your sons and your wife and your sons’ wives with you.
Bring a pair of every kind of animal—a male and a female—into the boat with you to keep them alive during the flood.19And you are to bring two of every living creature into the ark—male and female—to keep them alive with you.
Pairs of every kind of bird, and every kind of animal, and every kind of small animal that scurries along the ground, will come to you to be kept alive.20Two of every kind of bird and animal and crawling creature will come to you to be kept alive.
And be sure to take on board enough food for your family and for all the animals.”21You are also to take for yourself every kind of food that is eaten and gather it as food for yourselves and for the animals.”
So Noah did everything exactly as God had commanded him.22So Noah did everything precisely as God had commanded him.
