New Living TranslationNew International Version
Then the people began to multiply on the earth, and daughters were born to them.1When human beings began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them,
The sons of God saw the beautiful women and took any they wanted as their wives.2the sons of God saw that the daughters of humans were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose.
Then the LORD said, “My Spirit will not put up with humans for such a long time, for they are only mortal flesh. In the future, their normal lifespan will be no more than 120 years.”3Then the LORD said, "My Spirit will not contend with humans forever, for they are mortal; their days will be a hundred and twenty years."
In those days, and for some time after, giant Nephilites lived on the earth, for whenever the sons of God had intercourse with women, they gave birth to children who became the heroes and famous warriors of ancient times.4The Nephilim were on the earth in those days--and also afterward--when the sons of God went to the daughters of humans and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.
The LORD observed the extent of human wickedness on the earth, and he saw that everything they thought or imagined was consistently and totally evil.5The LORD saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time.
So the LORD was sorry he had ever made them and put them on the earth. It broke his heart.6The LORD regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled.
And the LORD said, “I will wipe this human race I have created from the face of the earth. Yes, and I will destroy every living thing—all the people, the large animals, the small animals that scurry along the ground, and even the birds of the sky. I am sorry I ever made them.”7So the LORD said, "I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created--and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground--for I regret that I have made them."
But Noah found favor with the LORD. The Story of Noah8But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD.
This is the account of Noah and his family. Noah was a righteous man, the only blameless person living on earth at the time, and he walked in close fellowship with God.9This is the account of Noah and his family. Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God.
Noah was the father of three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.10Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham and Japheth.
Now God saw that the earth had become corrupt and was filled with violence.11Now the earth was corrupt in God's sight and was full of violence.
God observed all this corruption in the world, for everyone on earth was corrupt.12God saw how corrupt the earth had become, for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways.
So God said to Noah, “I have decided to destroy all living creatures, for they have filled the earth with violence. Yes, I will wipe them all out along with the earth!13So God said to Noah, "I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth.
“Build a large boat from cypress wood and waterproof it with tar, inside and out. Then construct decks and stalls throughout its interior.14So make yourself an ark of cypress wood; make rooms in it and coat it with pitch inside and out.
Make the boat 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high.15This is how you are to build it: The ark is to be three hundred cubits long, fifty cubits wide and thirty cubits high.
Leave an 18-inch opening below the roof all the way around the boat. Put the door on the side, and build three decks inside the boat—lower, middle, and upper.16Make a roof for it, leaving below the roof an opening one cubit high all around. Put a door in the side of the ark and make lower, middle and upper decks.
“Look! I am about to cover the earth with a flood that will destroy every living thing that breathes. Everything on earth will die.17I am going to bring floodwaters on the earth to destroy all life under the heavens, every creature that has the breath of life in it. Everything on earth will perish.
But I will confirm my covenant with you. So enter the boat—you and your wife and your sons and their wives.18But I will establish my covenant with you, and you will enter the ark--you and your sons and your wife and your sons' wives with you.
Bring a pair of every kind of animal—a male and a female—into the boat with you to keep them alive during the flood.19You are to bring into the ark two of all living creatures, male and female, to keep them alive with you.
Pairs of every kind of bird, and every kind of animal, and every kind of small animal that scurries along the ground, will come to you to be kept alive.20Two of every kind of bird, of every kind of animal and of every kind of creature that moves along the ground will come to you to be kept alive.
And be sure to take on board enough food for your family and for all the animals.”21You are to take every kind of food that is to be eaten and store it away as food for you and for them."
So Noah did everything exactly as God had commanded him.22Noah did everything just as God commanded him.
