New Living TranslationKing James Bible
“Remember that the Levitical priests—that is, the whole of the tribe of Levi—will receive no allotment of land among the other tribes in Israel. Instead, the priests and Levites will eat from the special gifts given to the LORD, for that is their share.1The priests the Levites, and all the tribe of Levi, shall have no part nor inheritance with Israel: they shall eat the offerings of the LORD made by fire, and his inheritance.
They will have no land of their own among the Israelites. The LORD himself is their special possession, just as he promised them.2Therefore shall they have no inheritance among their brethren: the LORD is their inheritance, as he hath said unto them.
“These are the parts the priests may claim as their share from the cattle, sheep, and goats that the people bring as offerings: the shoulder, the cheeks, and the stomach.3And this shall be the priest's due from the people, from them that offer a sacrifice, whether it be ox or sheep; and they shall give unto the priest the shoulder, and the two cheeks, and the maw.
You must also give to the priests the first share of the grain, the new wine, the olive oil, and the wool at shearing time.4The firstfruit also of thy corn, of thy wine, and of thine oil, and the first of the fleece of thy sheep, shalt thou give him.
For the LORD your God chose the tribe of Levi out of all your tribes to minister in the LORD’s name forever.5For the LORD thy God hath chosen him out of all thy tribes, to stand to minister in the name of the LORD, him and his sons for ever.
“Suppose a Levite chooses to move from his town in Israel, wherever he is living, to the place the LORD chooses for worship.6And if a Levite come from any of thy gates out of all Israel, where he sojourned, and come with all the desire of his mind unto the place which the LORD shall choose;
He may minister there in the name of the LORD his God, just like all his fellow Levites who are serving the LORD there.7Then he shall minister in the name of the LORD his God, as all his brethren the Levites do, which stand there before the LORD.
He may eat his share of the sacrifices and offerings, even if he also receives support from his family. A Call to Holy Living8They shall have like portions to eat, beside that which cometh of the sale of his patrimony.
“When you enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, be very careful not to imitate the detestable customs of the nations living there.9When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations.
For example, never sacrifice your son or daughter as a burnt offering. And do not let your people practice fortune-telling, or use sorcery, or interpret omens, or engage in witchcraft,10There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch,
or cast spells, or function as mediums or psychics, or call forth the spirits of the dead.11Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.
Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD. It is because the other nations have done these detestable things that the LORD your God will drive them out ahead of you.12For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.
But you must be blameless before the LORD your God.13Thou shalt be perfect with the LORD thy God.
The nations you are about to displace consult sorcerers and fortune-tellers, but the LORD your God forbids you to do such things.” True and False Prophets14For these nations, which thou shalt possess, hearkened unto observers of times, and unto diviners: but as for thee, the LORD thy God hath not suffered thee so to do.
Moses continued, “The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your fellow Israelites. You must listen to him.15The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;
For this is what you yourselves requested of the LORD your God when you were assembled at Mount Sinai. You said, ‘Don’t let us hear the voice of the LORD our God anymore or see this blazing fire, for we will die.’16According to all that thou desiredst of the LORD thy God in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, neither let me see this great fire any more, that I die not.
“Then the LORD said to me, ‘What they have said is right.17And the LORD said unto me, They have well spoken that which they have spoken.
I will raise up a prophet like you from among their fellow Israelites. I will put my words in his mouth, and he will tell the people everything I command him.18I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.
I will personally deal with anyone who will not listen to the messages the prophet proclaims on my behalf.19And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.
But any prophet who falsely claims to speak in my name or who speaks in the name of another god must die.’20But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die.
“But you may wonder, ‘How will we know whether or not a prophecy is from the LORD?’21And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken?
If the prophet speaks in the LORD’s name but his prediction does not happen or come true, you will know that the LORD did not give that message. That prophet has spoken without my authority and need not be feared.22When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.
