New Living Translation | International Standard Version |
So then, since Christ suffered physical pain, you must arm yourselves with the same attitude he had, and be ready to suffer, too. For if you have suffered physically for Christ, you have finished with sin. | 1Therefore, since the Messiah suffered in a mortal body, you, too, must arm yourselves with the same determination, because the person who has suffered in a mortal body has stopped sinning, |
You won’t spend the rest of your lives chasing your own desires, but you will be anxious to do the will of God. | 2so that he can live the rest of his mortal life guided, not by human desires, but by the will of God. |
You have had enough in the past of the evil things that godless people enjoy—their immorality and lust, their feasting and drunkenness and wild parties, and their terrible worship of idols. | 3For you spent enough time in the past doing what the gentiles like to do, living in sensuality, sinful desires, drunkenness, wild celebrations, drinking parties, and detestable idolatry. |
Of course, your former friends are surprised when you no longer plunge into the flood of wild and destructive things they do. So they slander you. | 4They insult you now because they are surprised that you are no longer joining them in the same excesses of wild living. |
But remember that they will have to face God, who stands ready to judge everyone, both the living and the dead. | 5They will give an account to the one who is ready to judge the living and the dead. |
That is why the Good News was preached to those who are now dead —so although they were destined to die like all people, they now live forever with God in the Spirit. | 6Indeed, this is why the gospel was proclaimed even to those who have died, so that they could be judged in their mortal flesh like all humans and live in the spiritual realm like God. |
The end of the world is coming soon. Therefore, be earnest and disciplined in your prayers. | 7Because everything will soon come to an end, be sensible and clear-headed, so you can pray. |
Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins. | 8Above all, continue to love each other deeply, because love covers a multitude of sins. |
Cheerfully share your home with those who need a meal or a place to stay. | 9Show hospitality to one another without complaining. |
God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. | 10As good servant managers of God's grace in its various forms, serve one another with the gift each of you has received. |
Do you have the gift of speaking? Then speak as though God himself were speaking through you. Do you have the gift of helping others? Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies. Then everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ. All glory and power to him forever and ever! Amen. Suffering for Being a Christian | 11Whoever speaks must speak God's words. Whoever serves must serve with the strength that God supplies, so that in every way God may be glorified through Jesus, the Messiah. Glory and power belong to him forever and ever! Amen. |
Dear friends, don’t be surprised at the fiery trials you are going through, as if something strange were happening to you. | 12Dear friends, do not be surprised by the fiery ordeal that is taking place among you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. |
Instead, be very glad—for these trials make you partners with Christ in his suffering, so that you will have the wonderful joy of seeing his glory when it is revealed to all the world. | 13Instead, because you are participating in the sufferings of the Messiah, keep on rejoicing, so that you may be glad and shout for joy when his glory is revealed. |
If you are insulted because you bear the name of Christ, you will be blessed, for the glorious Spirit of God rests upon you. | 14If you are insulted because of the name of the Messiah, you are blessed, for the glorious Spirit of God is resting on you. |
If you suffer, however, it must not be for murder, stealing, making trouble, or prying into other people’s affairs. | 15Of course, none of you should suffer for being a murderer, thief, criminal, or troublemaker. |
But it is no shame to suffer for being a Christian. Praise God for the privilege of being called by his name! | 16But if you suffer for being a Christian, do not feel ashamed, but glorify God with that name. |
For the time has come for judgment, and it must begin with God’s household. And if judgment begins with us, what terrible fate awaits those who have never obeyed God’s Good News? | 17For the time has come for judgment to begin with the household of God. And if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who refuse to obey the gospel of God? |
And also, “If the righteous are barely saved, what will happen to godless sinners?” | 18"If it is hard for the righteous person to be saved, what will happen to the ungodly and sinful person?" |
So if you are suffering in a manner that pleases God, keep on doing what is right, and trust your lives to the God who created you, for he will never fail you. | 19So then, those who suffer according to God's will should entrust their souls to their faithful Creator and continue to do what is good. |
