New King James Version | New Living Translation |
Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, | 1Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. |
through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. | 2Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory. |
And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; | 3We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. |
and perseverance, character; and character, hope. | 4And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. |
Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us. | 5And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love. |
For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. | 6When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. |
For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. | 7Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good. |
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. | 8But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. |
Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. | 9And since we have been made right in God’s sight by the blood of Christ, he will certainly save us from God’s condemnation. |
For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. | 10For since our friendship with God was restored by the death of his Son while we were still his enemies, we will certainly be saved through the life of his Son. |
And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation. | 11So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God. Adam and Christ Contrasted |
Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned— | 12When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned. |
(For until the law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law. | 13Yes, people sinned even before the law was given. But it was not counted as sin because there was not yet any law to break. |
Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned according to the likeness of the transgression of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come. | 14Still, everyone died—from the time of Adam to the time of Moses—even those who did not disobey an explicit commandment of God, as Adam did. Now Adam is a symbol, a representation of Christ, who was yet to come. |
But the free gift is not like the offense. For if by the one man’s offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many. | 15But there is a great difference between Adam’s sin and God’s gracious gift. For the sin of this one man, Adam, brought death to many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of forgiveness to many through this other man, Jesus Christ. |
And the gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned. For the judgment which came from one offense resulted in condemnation, but the free gift which came from many offenses resulted in justification. | 16And the result of God’s gracious gift is very different from the result of that one man’s sin. For Adam’s sin led to condemnation, but God’s free gift leads to our being made right with God, even though we are guilty of many sins. |
For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.) | 17For the sin of this one man, Adam, caused death to rule over many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of righteousness, for all who receive it will live in triumph over sin and death through this one man, Jesus Christ. |
Therefore, as through one man’s offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man’s righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life. | 18Yes, Adam’s one sin brings condemnation for everyone, but Christ’s one act of righteousness brings a right relationship with God and new life for everyone. |
For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous. | 19Because one person disobeyed God, many became sinners. But because one other person obeyed God, many will be made righteous. |
Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more, | 20God’s law was given so that all people could see how sinful they were. But as people sinned more and more, God’s wonderful grace became more abundant. |
so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. | 21So just as sin ruled over all people and brought them to death, now God’s wonderful grace rules instead, giving us right standing with God and resulting in eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. |
