Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. | 18Now the birth of Jesus Christ happened this way. While his mother Mary was engaged to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. |
Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. | 19Because Joseph, her husband to be, was a righteous man, and because he did not want to disgrace her, he intended to divorce her privately. |
But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. | 20When he had contemplated this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. |
And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins.” | 21She will give birth to a son and you will name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." |
So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: | 22This all happened so that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet would be fulfilled: |
“Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.” | 23"Look! The virgin will conceive and bear a son, and they will call him Emmanuel," which means "God with us." |
Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife, | 24When Joseph awoke from sleep he did what the angel of the Lord told him. He took his wife, |
and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name JESUS. | 25but did not have marital relations with her until she gave birth to a son, whom he named Jesus. |
