2while Annas and Caiaphas were high priests, the word of God came to John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness. | 2in the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John, the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness. |
3And he went into all the region around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins, | 3And he came into all the district around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins; |

5Every valley shall be filled And every mountain and hill brought low; The crooked places shall be made straight And the rough ways smooth; | 5'EVERY RAVINE WILL BE FILLED, AND EVERY MOUNTAIN AND HILL WILL BE BROUGHT LOW; THE CROOKED WILL BECOME STRAIGHT, AND THE ROUGH ROADS SMOOTH; |
6And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.’ ” | 6AND ALL FLESH WILL SEE THE SALVATION OF GOD.'" |
7Then he said to the multitudes that came out to be baptized by him, “Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? | 7So he began saying to the crowds who were going out to be baptized by him, "You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? |
8Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones. | 8"Therefore bear fruits in keeping with repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham for our father,' for I say to you that from these stones God is able to raise up children to Abraham. |
9And even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.” | 9"Indeed the axe is already laid at the root of the trees; so every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire." |

11He answered and said to them, “He who has two tunics, let him give to him who has none; and he who has food, let him do likewise.” | 11And he would answer and say to them, "The man who has two tunics is to share with him who has none; and he who has food is to do likewise." |
12Then tax collectors also came to be baptized, and said to him, “Teacher, what shall we do?” | 12And some tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him, "Teacher, what shall we do?" |
13And he said to them, “Collect no more than what is appointed for you.” | 13And he said to them, "Collect no more than what you have been ordered to." |
14Likewise the soldiers asked him, saying, “And what shall we do?” So he said to them, “Do not intimidate anyone or accuse falsely, and be content with your wages.” | 14Some soldiers were questioning him, saying, "And what about us, what shall we do?" And he said to them, "Do not take money from anyone by force, or accuse anyone falsely, and be content with your wages." |
15Now as the people were in expectation, and all reasoned in their hearts about John, whether he was the Christ or not, | 15Now while the people were in a state of expectation and all were wondering in their hearts about John, as to whether he was the Christ, |
16John answered, saying to all, “I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. | 16John answered and said to them all, "As for me, I baptize you with water; but One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to untie the thong of His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. |
17His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather the wheat into His barn; but the chaff He will burn with unquenchable fire.” | 17"His winnowing fork is in His hand to thoroughly clear His threshing floor, and to gather the wheat into His barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire." |
18And with many other exhortations he preached to the people. | 18So with many other exhortations he preached the gospel to the people. |
19But Herod the tetrarch, being rebuked by him concerning Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done, | 19But when Herod the tetrarch was reprimanded by him because of Herodias, his brother's wife, and because of all the wicked things which Herod had done, |
20also added this, above all, that he shut John up in prison. | 20Herod also added this to them all: he locked John up in prison. |
21When all the people were baptized, it came to pass that Jesus also was baptized; and while He prayed, the heaven was opened. | 21Now when all the people were baptized, Jesus was also baptized, and while He was praying, heaven was opened, |
22And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.” | 22and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came out of heaven, "You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased." |
