New King James Version | Berean Study Bible |
Woe to you who are at ease in Zion, And trust in Mount Samaria, Notable persons in the chief nation, To whom the house of Israel comes! | 1Woe to those at ease in Zion and those secure on Mount Samaria, the distinguished ones of the foremost nation, to whom the house of Israel comes. |
Go over to Calneh and see; And from there go to Hamath the great; Then go down to Gath of the Philistines. Are you better than these kingdoms? Or is their territory greater than your territory? | 2Cross over to Calneh and see; go from there to the great Hamath; then go down to Gath of the Philistines. Are you better than these kingdoms? Is their territory larger than yours? |
Woe to you who put far off the day of doom, Who cause the seat of violence to come near; | 3You dismiss the day of calamity and bring near a reign of violence. |
Who lie on beds of ivory, Stretch out on your couches, Eat lambs from the flock And calves from the midst of the stall; | 4You lie on beds inlaid with ivory, and lounge upon your couches. You dine on lambs from the flock and calves from the stall. |
Who sing idly to the sound of stringed instruments, And invent for yourselves musical instruments like David; | 5You improvise songs on the harp like David and invent your own musical instruments. |
Who drink wine from bowls, And anoint yourselves with the best ointments, But are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph. | 6You drink wine by the bowlful and anoint yourselves with the finest oils, but you fail to grieve over the ruin of Joseph. |
Therefore they shall now go captive as the first of the captives, And those who recline at banquets shall be removed. | 7Therefore, you will now go into exile as the first of the captives, and your feasting and lounging will come to an end. |
The Lord GOD has sworn by Himself, The LORD God of hosts says: “I abhor the pride of Jacob, And hate his palaces; Therefore I will deliver up the city And all that is in it.” | 8The Lord GOD has sworn by Himself—the LORD, the God of Hosts, has declared: “I abhor Jacob’s pride and detest his citadels, so I will deliver up the city and everything in it.” |
Then it shall come to pass, that if ten men remain in one house, they shall die. | 9And if there are ten men left in one house, they too will die. |
And when a relative of the dead, with one who will burn the bodies, picks up the bodies to take them out of the house, he will say to one inside the house, “Are there any more with you?” Then someone will say, “None.” And he will say, “Hold your tongue! For we dare not mention the name of the LORD.” | 10And when the relative who is to burn the bodies picks them up to remove them from the house, he will call to one inside, “Is anyone else with you?” “None,” that person will answer. “Silence,” the relative will retort, “for the name of the LORD must not be invoked.” |
For behold, the LORD gives a command: He will break the great house into bits, And the little house into pieces. | 11For the LORD gives a command: “The great house will be smashed to pieces, and the small house to rubble.” |
Do horses run on rocks? Does one plow there with oxen? Yet you have turned justice into gall, And the fruit of righteousness into wormwood, | 12“Do horses gallop on the cliffs? Does one plow the sea with oxen? But you have turned justice into poison and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood— |
You who rejoice over Lo Debar, Who say, “Have we not taken Karnaim for ourselves By our own strength?” | 13you who rejoice in Lo-debar and say, ‘Did we not take Karnaim by our own strength?’ |
“But, behold, I will raise up a nation against you, O house of Israel,” Says the LORD God of hosts; “And they will afflict you from the entrance of Hamath To the Valley of the Arabah.” | 14For behold, I will raise up a nation against you, O house of Israel,” declares the LORD, the God of Hosts, “and they will oppress you from Lebo-hamath to the Brook of the Arabah.” |
