New International Version | New Living Translation |
For the director of music. A maskil of the Sons of Korah. As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. | 1As the deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you, O God. |
My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God? | 2I thirst for God, the living God. When can I go and stand before him? |
My tears have been my food day and night, while people say to me all day long, "Where is your God?" | 3Day and night I have only tears for food, while my enemies continually taunt me, saying, “Where is this God of yours?” |
These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go to the house of God under the protection of the Mighty One with shouts of joy and praise among the festive throng. | 4My heart is breaking as I remember how it used to be: I walked among the crowds of worshipers, leading a great procession to the house of God, singing for joy and giving thanks amid the sound of a great celebration! |
Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God. | 5Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again— my Savior and |
My soul is downcast within me; therefore I will remember you from the land of the Jordan, the heights of Hermon--from Mount Mizar. | 6my God! Now I am deeply discouraged, but I will remember you— even from distant Mount Hermon, the source of the Jordan, from the land of Mount Mizar. |
Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me. | 7I hear the tumult of the raging seas as your waves and surging tides sweep over me. |
By day the LORD directs his love, at night his song is with me-- a prayer to the God of my life. | 8But each day the LORD pours his unfailing love upon me, and through each night I sing his songs, praying to God who gives me life. |
I say to God my Rock, "Why have you forgotten me? Why must I go about mourning, oppressed by the enemy?" | 9“O God my rock,” I cry, “why have you forgotten me? Why must I wander around in grief, oppressed by my enemies?” |
My bones suffer mortal agony as my foes taunt me, saying to me all day long, "Where is your God?" | 10Their taunts break my bones. They scoff, “Where is this God of yours?” |
Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God. | 11Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again— my Savior and my God! |
