Psalm 42
NIV Parallel ISV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
New International VersionInternational Standard Version
1For the director of music. A maskil of the Sons of Korah. As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God.1As an antelope pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, God.
2My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?2My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When may I come and appear in God's presence?
3My tears have been my food day and night, while people say to me all day long, "Where is your God?"3My tears have been my food day and night, while people keep asking me all day long, "Where is your God?"
4These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go to the house of God under the protection of the Mighty One with shouts of joy and praise among the festive throng.4These things I will recall as I pour out my troubles within me: I used to go with the crowd in a procession to the house of God, accompanied with shouts of joy and thanksgiving.
5Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.5Why are you in despair, my soul? Why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God, for once again I will praise him, since his presence saves me.
6My soul is downcast within me; therefore I will remember you from the land of the Jordan, the heights of Hermon--from Mount Mizar.6My God, my soul feels depressed within me; therefore I will remember you from the land of Jordan, from the heights of Hermon, even from the foothills.
7Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me.7Deep waters call out to what is deeper still; at the roar of your waterfalls all your breakers and your waves swirled over me.
8By day the LORD directs his love, at night his song is with me-- a prayer to the God of my life.8By day the LORD will command his gracious love, and by night his song is with me— a prayer to the God of my life.
9I say to God my Rock, "Why have you forgotten me? Why must I go about mourning, oppressed by the enemy?"9I will ask God, my Rock, "Why have you forsaken me? Why do I go around mourning under the enemy's oppression?"
10My bones suffer mortal agony as my foes taunt me, saying to me all day long, "Where is your God?"10Like the shattering of my bones are the taunts of my oppressors, saying to me all day long, "Where is your God?"
11Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.11Why are you in despair, my soul? Why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God, for once again I will praise him, since his presence saves me and he is my God.
