| 1For the director of music. Of David. A psalm. You have searched me, LORD, and you know me. | 1O LORD, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. |
| 2You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. | 2You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far away. |
| 3You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. | 3You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do. |
| 4Before a word is on my tongue you, LORD, know it completely. | 4You know what I am going to say even before I say it, LORD. |
| 5You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me. | 5You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head. |
| 6Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain. | 6Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand! |
| 7Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? | 7I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence! |
| 8If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. | 8If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there. |

| 14I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. | 14Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it. |
| 15My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. | 15You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. |
| 16Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. | 16You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed. |
| 17How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them! | 17How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered! |
| 18Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand-- when I awake, I am still with you. | 18I can’t even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand! And when I wake up, you are still with me! |
| 19If only you, God, would slay the wicked! Away from me, you who are bloodthirsty! | 19O God, if only you would destroy the wicked! Get out of my life, you murderers! |
| 20They speak of you with evil intent; your adversaries misuse your name. | 20They blaspheme you; your enemies misuse your name. |
| 21Do I not hate those who hate you, LORD, and abhor those who are in rebellion against you? | 21O LORD, shouldn’t I hate those who hate you? Shouldn’t I despise those who oppose you? |
| 22I have nothing but hatred for them; I count them my enemies. | 22Yes, I hate them with total hatred, for your enemies are my enemies. |
| 23Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. | 23Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. |
| 24See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. | 24Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life. |
