For the director of music. A psalm of David. Blessed are those who have regard for the weak; the LORD delivers them in times of trouble. | 1For the music director; a psalm of David. How blessed is the one who treats the poor properly! When trouble comes, the LORD delivers him. |
The LORD protects and preserves them-- they are counted among the blessed in the land-- he does not give them over to the desire of their foes. | 2May the LORD protect him and save his life! May he be blessed in the land! Do not turn him over to his enemies! |
The LORD sustains them on their sickbed and restores them from their bed of illness. | 3The LORD supports him on his sickbed; you completely heal him from his illness. |
I said, "Have mercy on me, LORD; heal me, for I have sinned against you." | 4As for me, I said: "O LORD, have mercy on me! Heal me, for I have sinned against you! |
My enemies say of me in malice, "When will he die and his name perish?" | 5My enemies ask this cruel question about me, 'When will he finally die and be forgotten?' |
When one of them comes to see me, he speaks falsely, while his heart gathers slander; then he goes out and spreads it around. | 6When someone comes to visit, he pretends to be friendly; he thinks of ways to defame me, and when he leaves he slanders me. |
All my enemies whisper together against me; they imagine the worst for me, saying, | 7All who hate me whisper insults about me to one another; they plan ways to harm me. |
"A vile disease has afflicted him; he will never get up from the place where he lies." | 8They say, 'An awful disease overwhelms him, and now that he is bed-ridden he will never recover.' |
Even my close friend, someone I trusted, one who shared my bread, has turned against me. | 9Even my close friend whom I trusted, he who shared meals with me, has turned against me. |
But may you have mercy on me, LORD; raise me up, that I may repay them. | 10As for you, O LORD, have mercy on me and raise me up, so I can pay them back!" |
I know that you are pleased with me, for my enemy does not triumph over me. | 11By this I know that you are pleased with me, for my enemy does not triumph over me. |
Because of my integrity you uphold me and set me in your presence forever. | 12As for me, you uphold me because of my integrity; you allow me permanent access to your presence. |
Praise be to the LORD, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. Amen and Amen. | 13The LORD God of Israel deserves praise in the future and forevermore! We agree! We agree! |
