New International VersionNET Bible
on the twenty-first day of the seventh month, the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai:1On the twenty-first day of the seventh month, the LORD spoke again through the prophet Haggai:
"Speak to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, to Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people. Ask them,2"Ask the following questions to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and the remnant of the people:
Who of you is left who saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Does it not seem to you like nothing?3Who among you survivors saw the former splendor of this temple? How does it look to you now? Isn't it nothing by comparison?
But now be strong, Zerubbabel,' declares the LORD. 'Be strong, Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land,' declares the LORD, 'and work. For I am with you,' declares the LORD Almighty.4Even so, take heart, Zerubbabel,' says the LORD. 'Take heart, Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and all you citizens of the land,' says the LORD, 'and begin to work. For I am with you,' says the LORD who rules over all.
This is what I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt. And my Spirit remains among you. Do not fear.'5Do not fear, because I made a promise to your ancestors when they left Egypt, and my spirit even now testifies to you.'
"This is what the LORD Almighty says: 'In a little while I will once more shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land.6Moreover, the LORD who rules over all says: 'In just a little while I will once again shake the sky and the earth, the sea and the dry ground.
I will shake all nations, and what is desired by all nations will come, and I will fill this house with glory,' says the LORD Almighty.7I will also shake up all the nations, and they will offer their treasures; then I will fill this temple with glory,' says the LORD who rules over all.
The silver is mine and the gold is mine,' declares the LORD Almighty.8The silver and gold will be mine,' says the LORD who rules over all.
The glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house,' says the LORD Almighty. 'And in this place I will grant peace,' declares the LORD Almighty."9The future splendor of this temple will be greater than that of former times,' the LORD who rules over all declares, 'and in this place I will give peace.'"
On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came to the prophet Haggai:10On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month of Darius' second year, the LORD spoke again to the prophet Haggai:
"This is what the LORD Almighty says: 'Ask the priests what the law says:11"The LORD who rules over all says, 'Ask the priests about the law.
If someone carries consecrated meat in the fold of their garment, and that fold touches some bread or stew, some wine, olive oil or other food, does it become consecrated?'" The priests answered, "No."12If someone carries holy meat in a fold of his garment and that fold touches bread, a boiled dish, wine, olive oil, or any other food, will that item become holy?'" The priests answered, "It will not."
Then Haggai said, "If a person defiled by contact with a dead body touches one of these things, does it become defiled?" "Yes," the priests replied, "it becomes defiled."13Then Haggai asked, "If a person who is ritually unclean because of touching a dead body comes in contact with one of these items, will it become unclean?" The priests answered, "It will be unclean."
Then Haggai said, "'So it is with this people and this nation in my sight,' declares the LORD. 'Whatever they do and whatever they offer there is defiled.14Then Haggai responded, "'The people of this nation are unclean in my sight,' says the LORD. 'And so is all their effort; everything they offer is also unclean.
"'Now give careful thought to this from this day on --consider how things were before one stone was laid on another in the LORD's temple.15Now therefore reflect carefully on the recent past, before one stone was laid on another in the LORD's temple.
When anyone came to a heap of twenty measures, there were only ten. When anyone went to a wine vat to draw fifty measures, there were only twenty.16From that time when one came expecting a heap of twenty measures, there were only ten; when one came to the wine vat to draw out fifty measures from it, there were only twenty.
I struck all the work of your hands with blight, mildew and hail, yet you did not return to me,' declares the LORD.17I struck all the products of your labor with blight, disease, and hail, and yet you brought nothing to me,' says the LORD.
From this day on, from this twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, give careful thought to the day when the foundation of the LORD's temple was laid. Give careful thought:18Think carefully about the past: from today, the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, to the day work on the temple of the LORD was resumed, think about it.
Is there yet any seed left in the barn? Until now, the vine and the fig tree, the pomegranate and the olive tree have not borne fruit. "'From this day on I will bless you.'"19The seed is still in the storehouse, isn't it? And the vine, fig tree, pomegranate, and olive tree have not produced. Nevertheless, from today on I will bless you.'"
The word of the LORD came to Haggai a second time on the twenty-fourth day of the month:20Then the LORD spoke again to Haggai on the twenty-fourth day of the month:
"Tell Zerubbabel governor of Judah that I am going to shake the heavens and the earth.21Tell Zerubbabel governor of Judah: 'I am ready to shake the sky and the earth.
I will overturn royal thrones and shatter the power of the foreign kingdoms. I will overthrow chariots and their drivers; horses and their riders will fall, each by the sword of his brother.22I will overthrow royal thrones and shatter the might of earthly kingdoms. I will overthrow chariots and those who ride them, and horses and their riders will fall as people kill one another.
"'On that day,' declares the LORD Almighty, 'I will take you, my servant Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel,' declares the LORD, 'and I will make you like my signet ring, for I have chosen you,' declares the LORD Almighty."23On that day,' says the LORD who rules over all, 'I will take you, Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, my servant,' says the LORD, 'and I will make you like a signet ring, for I have chosen you,' says the LORD who rules over all."
