| 1on the twenty-first day of the seventh month, the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai: | 1On the twenty-first of the seventh month, the word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet saying, |
| 2"Speak to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, to Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people. Ask them, | 2"Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people saying, |
| 3Who of you is left who saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Does it not seem to you like nothing? | 3'Who is left among you who saw this temple in its former glory? And how do you see it now? Does it not seem to you like nothing in comparison? |
| 4But now be strong, Zerubbabel,' declares the LORD. 'Be strong, Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land,' declares the LORD, 'and work. For I am with you,' declares the LORD Almighty. | 4'But now take courage, Zerubbabel,' declares the LORD, 'take courage also, Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and all you people of the land take courage,' declares the LORD, 'and work; for I am with you,' declares the LORD of hosts. |
| 5This is what I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt. And my Spirit remains among you. Do not fear.' | 5'As for the promise which I made you when you came out of Egypt, My Spirit is abiding in your midst; do not fear!' |
| 6"This is what the LORD Almighty says: 'In a little while I will once more shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land. | 6"For thus says the LORD of hosts, 'Once more in a little while, I am going to shake the heavens and the earth, the sea also and the dry land. |
| 7I will shake all nations, and what is desired by all nations will come, and I will fill this house with glory,' says the LORD Almighty. | 7'I will shake all the nations; and they will come with the wealth of all nations, and I will fill this house with glory,' says the LORD of hosts. |
| 8The silver is mine and the gold is mine,' declares the LORD Almighty. | 8'The silver is Mine and the gold is Mine,' declares the LORD of hosts. |
| 9The glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house,' says the LORD Almighty. 'And in this place I will grant peace,' declares the LORD Almighty." | 9'The latter glory of this house will be greater than the former,' says the LORD of hosts, 'and in this place I will give peace,' declares the LORD of hosts." |
| 10On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came to the prophet Haggai: | 10On the twenty-fourth of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came to Haggai the prophet, saying, |
| 11"This is what the LORD Almighty says: 'Ask the priests what the law says: | 11"Thus says the LORD of hosts, 'Ask now the priests for a ruling: |
| 12If someone carries consecrated meat in the fold of their garment, and that fold touches some bread or stew, some wine, olive oil or other food, does it become consecrated?'" The priests answered, "No." | 12If a man carries holy meat in the fold of his garment, and touches bread with this fold, or cooked food, wine, oil, or any other food, will it become holy?'" And the priests answered, "No." |
| 13Then Haggai said, "If a person defiled by contact with a dead body touches one of these things, does it become defiled?" "Yes," the priests replied, "it becomes defiled." | 13Then Haggai said, "If one who is unclean from a corpse touches any of these, will the latter become unclean?" And the priests answered, "It will become unclean." |
| 14Then Haggai said, "'So it is with this people and this nation in my sight,' declares the LORD. 'Whatever they do and whatever they offer there is defiled. | 14Then Haggai said, "'So is this people. And so is this nation before Me,' declares the LORD, 'and so is every work of their hands; and what they offer there is unclean. |
| 15"'Now give careful thought to this from this day on --consider how things were before one stone was laid on another in the LORD's temple. | 15'But now, do consider from this day onward: before one stone was placed on another in the temple of the LORD, |
| 16When anyone came to a heap of twenty measures, there were only ten. When anyone went to a wine vat to draw fifty measures, there were only twenty. | 16from that time when one came to a grain heap of twenty measures, there would be only ten; and when one came to the wine vat to draw fifty measures, there would be only twenty. |
| 17I struck all the work of your hands with blight, mildew and hail, yet you did not return to me,' declares the LORD. | 17I smote you and every work of your hands with blasting wind, mildew and hail; yet you did not come back to Me,' declares the LORD. |
| 18From this day on, from this twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, give careful thought to the day when the foundation of the LORD's temple was laid. Give careful thought: | 18Do consider from this day onward, from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month; from the day when the temple of the LORD was founded, consider: |
| 19Is there yet any seed left in the barn? Until now, the vine and the fig tree, the pomegranate and the olive tree have not borne fruit. "'From this day on I will bless you.'" | 19Is the seed still in the barn? Even including the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate and the olive tree, it has not borne fruit. Yet from this day on I will bless you.'" |
| 20The word of the LORD came to Haggai a second time on the twenty-fourth day of the month: | 20Then the word of the LORD came a second time to Haggai on the twenty-fourth day of the month, saying, |
| 21"Tell Zerubbabel governor of Judah that I am going to shake the heavens and the earth. | 21"Speak to Zerubbabel governor of Judah, saying, 'I am going to shake the heavens and the earth. |
| 22I will overturn royal thrones and shatter the power of the foreign kingdoms. I will overthrow chariots and their drivers; horses and their riders will fall, each by the sword of his brother. | 22'I will overthrow the thrones of kingdoms and destroy the power of the kingdoms of the nations; and I will overthrow the chariots and their riders, and the horses and their riders will go down, everyone by the sword of another.' |
| 23"'On that day,' declares the LORD Almighty, 'I will take you, my servant Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel,' declares the LORD, 'and I will make you like my signet ring, for I have chosen you,' declares the LORD Almighty." | 23On that day,' declares the LORD of hosts, 'I will take you, Zerubbabel, son of Shealtiel, My servant,' declares the LORD, 'and I will make you like a signet ring, for I have chosen you,'" declares the LORD of hosts. |
