In the second year of King Darius, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest: | 1On the first day of the sixth month of King Darius' second year, the LORD spoke this message through the prophet Haggai to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak: |
This is what the LORD Almighty says: "These people say, 'The time has not yet come to rebuild the LORD's house.'" | 2The LORD who rules over all says this: "These people have said, 'The time for rebuilding the LORD's temple has not yet come.'" |
Then the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai: | 3So the LORD spoke through the prophet Haggai as follows: |
"Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses, while this house remains a ruin?" | 4"Is it right for you to live in richly paneled houses while my temple is in ruins? |
Now this is what the LORD Almighty says: "Give careful thought to your ways. | 5Here then is what the LORD who rules over all says: 'Think carefully about what you are doing. |
You have planted much, but harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it." | 6You have planted much, but have harvested little. You eat, but are never filled. You drink, but are still thirsty. You put on clothes, but are not warm. Those who earn wages end up with holes in their money bags.'" |
This is what the LORD Almighty says: "Give careful thought to your ways. | 7"Moreover, the LORD who rules over all says: 'Pay close attention to these things also. |
Go up into the mountains and bring down timber and build my house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored," says the LORD. | 8Go up to the hill country and bring back timber to build the temple. Then I will be pleased and honored,' says the LORD. |
"You expected much, but see, it turned out to be little. What you brought home, I blew away. Why?" declares the LORD Almighty. "Because of my house, which remains a ruin, while each of you is busy with your own house. | 9You expected a large harvest, but instead there was little, and when you brought it home it disappeared right away. Why?' asks the LORD who rules over all. 'Because my temple remains in ruins, thanks to each of you favoring his own house! |
Therefore, because of you the heavens have withheld their dew and the earth its crops. | 10This is why the sky has held back its dew and the earth its produce. |
I called for a drought on the fields and the mountains, on the grain, the new wine, the olive oil and everything else the ground produces, on people and livestock, and on all the labor of your hands." | 11Moreover, I have called for a drought that will affect the fields, the hill country, the grain, new wine, fresh olive oil, and everything that grows from the ground; it also will harm people, animals, and everything they produce.'" |
Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest, and the whole remnant of the people obeyed the voice of the LORD their God and the message of the prophet Haggai, because the LORD their God had sent him. And the people feared the LORD. | 12Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, along with the whole remnant of the people, obeyed the LORD their God. They responded favorably to the message of the prophet Haggai, who spoke just as the LORD their God had instructed him, and the people began to respect the LORD. |
Then Haggai, the LORD's messenger, gave this message of the LORD to the people: "I am with you," declares the LORD. | 13Then Haggai, the LORD's messenger, spoke the LORD's word to the people: "I am with you!" says the LORD. |
So the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of the whole remnant of the people. They came and began to work on the house of the LORD Almighty, their God, | 14So the LORD energized and encouraged Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and the whole remnant of the people. They came and worked on the temple of their God, the LORD who rules over all. |
on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month. In the second year of King Darius, | 15This took place on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month of King Darius' second year. |
