Now Elijah the Tishbite, from Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, "As the LORD, the God of Israel, lives, whom I serve, there will be neither dew nor rain in the next few years except at my word."1Elijah the Tishbite, from Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, "As certainly as the LORD God of Israel lives (whom I serve), there will be no dew or rain in the years ahead unless I give the command."
Then the word of the LORD came to Elijah:2The LORD told him:
"Leave here, turn eastward and hide in the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan.3"Leave here and travel eastward. Hide out in the Kerith Valley near the Jordan.
You will drink from the brook, and I have directed the ravens to supply you with food there."4Drink from the stream; I have already told the ravens to bring you food there."
So he did what the LORD had told him. He went to the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan, and stayed there.5So he did as the LORD told him; he went and lived in the Kerith Valley near the Jordan.
The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the brook.6The ravens would bring him bread and meat each morning and evening, and he would drink from the stream.
Some time later the brook dried up because there had been no rain in the land.7After a while, the stream dried up because there had been no rain in the land.
Then the word of the LORD came to him:8The LORD told him,
"Go at once to Zarephath in the region of Sidon and stay there. I have directed a widow there to supply you with food."9"Get up, go to Zarephath in Sidonian territory, and live there. I have already told a widow who lives there to provide for you."
So he went to Zarephath. When he came to the town gate, a widow was there gathering sticks. He called to her and asked, "Would you bring me a little water in a jar so I may have a drink?"10So he got up and went to Zarephath. When he went through the city gate, there was a widow gathering wood. He called out to her, "Please give me a cup of water, so I can take a drink."
As she was going to get it, he called, "And bring me, please, a piece of bread."11As she went to get it, he called out to her, "Please bring me a piece of bread."
"As surely as the LORD your God lives," she replied, "I don't have any bread--only a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat it--and die."12She said, "As certainly as the LORD your God lives, I have no food, except for a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a jug. Right now I am gathering a couple of sticks for a fire. Then I'm going home to make one final meal for my son and myself. After we have eaten that, we will die of starvation."
Elijah said to her, "Don't be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small loaf of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son.13Elijah said to her, "Don't be afraid. Go and do as you planned. But first make a small cake for me and bring it to me; then make something for yourself and your son.
For this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the LORD sends rain on the land.'"14For this is what the LORD God of Israel says, 'The jar of flour will not be empty and the jug of oil will not run out until the day the LORD makes it rain on the surface of the ground.'"
She went away and did as Elijah had told her. So there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family.15She went and did as Elijah told her; there was always enough food for Elijah and for her and her family.
For the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry, in keeping with the word of the LORD spoken by Elijah.16The jar of flour was never empty and the jug of oil never ran out, just as the LORD had promised through Elijah.
Some time later the son of the woman who owned the house became ill. He grew worse and worse, and finally stopped breathing.17After this the son of the woman who owned the house got sick. His illness was so severe he could no longer breathe.
She said to Elijah, "What do you have against me, man of God? Did you come to remind me of my sin and kill my son?"18She asked Elijah, "Why, prophet, have you come to me to confront me with my sin and kill my son?"
"Give me your son," Elijah replied. He took him from her arms, carried him to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him on his bed.19He said to her, "Hand me your son." He took him from her arms, carried him to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him down on his bed.
Then he cried out to the LORD, "LORD my God, have you brought tragedy even on this widow I am staying with, by causing her son to die?"20Then he called out to the LORD, "O LORD, my God, are you also bringing disaster on this widow I am staying with by killing her son?"
Then he stretched himself out on the boy three times and cried out to the LORD, "LORD my God, let this boy's life return to him!"21He stretched out over the boy three times and called out to the LORD, "O LORD, my God, please let this boy's breath return to him."
The LORD heard Elijah's cry, and the boy's life returned to him, and he lived.22The LORD answered Elijah's prayer; the boy's breath returned to him and he lived.
Elijah picked up the child and carried him down from the room into the house. He gave him to his mother and said, "Look, your son is alive!"23Elijah took the boy, brought him down from the upper room to the house, and handed him to his mother. Elijah then said, "See, your son is alive!"
Then the woman said to Elijah, "Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the LORD from your mouth is the truth."24The woman said to Elijah, "Now I know that you are a prophet and that the LORD really does speak through you."
