Now Elijah the Tishbite, from Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, "As the LORD, the God of Israel, lives, whom I serve, there will be neither dew nor rain in the next few years except at my word."1Now Elijah the Tishbite, from the Gilead settlers, said to Ahab, "As the LORD God of Israel lives, I stand before Him, and there will be no dew or rain during these years except by my command!"
Then the word of the LORD came to Elijah:2Then a revelation from the LORD came to him: "
"Leave here, turn eastward and hide in the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan.3Leave here, turn eastward, and hide yourself at the Wadi Cherith where it enters the Jordan.
You will drink from the brook, and I have directed the ravens to supply you with food there."4You are to drink from the wadi. I have commanded the ravens to provide for you there."
So he did what the LORD had told him. He went to the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan, and stayed there.5So he did what the LORD commanded. Elijah left and lived by the Wadi Cherith where it enters the Jordan.
The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the brook.6The ravens kept bringing him bread and meat in the morning and in the evening, and he drank from the wadi.
Some time later the brook dried up because there had been no rain in the land.7After a while, the wadi dried up because there had been no rain in the land.
Then the word of the LORD came to him:8Then the word of the LORD came to him: "
"Go at once to Zarephath in the region of Sidon and stay there. I have directed a widow there to supply you with food."9Get up, go to Zarephath that belongs to Sidon and stay there. Look, I have commanded a woman who is a widow to provide for you there."
So he went to Zarephath. When he came to the town gate, a widow was there gathering sticks. He called to her and asked, "Would you bring me a little water in a jar so I may have a drink?"10So Elijah got up and went to Zarephath. When he arrived at the city gate, there was a widow woman gathering wood. Elijah called to her and said, "Please bring me a little water in a cup and let me drink."
As she was going to get it, he called, "And bring me, please, a piece of bread."11As she went to get it, he called to her and said, "Please bring me a piece of bread in your hand."
"As surely as the LORD your God lives," she replied, "I don't have any bread--only a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat it--and die."12But she said, "As the LORD your God lives, I don't have anything baked--only a handful of flour in the jar and a bit of oil in the jug. Just now, I am gathering a couple of sticks in order to go prepare it for myself and my son so we can eat it and die."
Elijah said to her, "Don't be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small loaf of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son.13Then Elijah said to her, "Don't be afraid; go and do as you have said. But first make me a small loaf from it and bring it out to me. Afterward, you may make some for yourself and your son,
For this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the LORD sends rain on the land.'"14for this is what the LORD God of Israel says, 'The flour jar will not become empty and the oil jug will not run dry until the day the LORD sends rain on the surface of the land."
She went away and did as Elijah had told her. So there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family.15So she proceeded to do according to the word of Elijah. Then the woman, Elijah, and her household ate for many days.
For the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry, in keeping with the word of the LORD spoken by Elijah.16The flour jar did not become empty, and the oil jug did not run dry, according to the word of the LORD He had spoken through Elijah.
Some time later the son of the woman who owned the house became ill. He grew worse and worse, and finally stopped breathing.17After this, the son of the woman who owned the house became ill. His illness became very severe until no breath remained in him.
She said to Elijah, "What do you have against me, man of God? Did you come to remind me of my sin and kill my son?"18She said to Elijah, "Man of God, what do we have in common? Have you come to remind me of my guilt and to kill my son?"
"Give me your son," Elijah replied. He took him from her arms, carried him to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him on his bed.19But Elijah said to her, "Give me your son." So he took him from her arms, brought him up to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him on his own bed.
Then he cried out to the LORD, "LORD my God, have you brought tragedy even on this widow I am staying with, by causing her son to die?"20Then he cried out to the LORD and said, "My LORD God, have You also brought tragedy on the widow I am staying with by killing her son?"
Then he stretched himself out on the boy three times and cried out to the LORD, "LORD my God, let this boy's life return to him!"21Then he stretched himself out over the boy three times. He cried out to the LORD and said, "My LORD God, please let this boy's life return to him!"
The LORD heard Elijah's cry, and the boy's life returned to him, and he lived.22So the LORD listened to Elijah's voice, and the boy's life returned to him, and he lived.
Elijah picked up the child and carried him down from the room into the house. He gave him to his mother and said, "Look, your son is alive!"23Then Elijah took the boy, brought him down from the upper room into the house, and gave him to his mother. Elijah said, "Look, your son is alive."
Then the woman said to Elijah, "Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the LORD from your mouth is the truth."24Then the woman said to Elijah, "Now I know you are a man of God and the LORD's word from your mouth is true."
