| 1If any of you has a dispute with another, do you dare to take it before the ungodly for judgment instead of before the Lord's people? | 1When one of you has a grievance against another, does he dare go to law before the unrighteous instead of the saints? |
| 2Or do you not know that the Lord's people will judge the world? And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases? | 2Or do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world is to be judged by you, are you incompetent to try trivial cases? |
| 3Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life! | 3Do you not know that we are to judge angels? How much more, then, matters pertaining to this life! |
| 4Therefore, if you have disputes about such matters, do you ask for a ruling from those whose way of life is scorned in the church? | 4So if you have such cases, why do you lay them before those who have no standing in the church? |
| 5I say this to shame you. Is it possible that there is nobody among you wise enough to judge a dispute between believers? | 5I say this to your shame. Can it be that there is no one among you wise enough to settle a dispute between the brothers, |
| 6But instead, one brother takes another to court--and this in front of unbelievers! | 6but brother goes to law against brother, and that before unbelievers? |
| 7The very fact that you have lawsuits among you means you have been completely defeated already. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated? | 7To have lawsuits at all with one another is already a defeat for you. Why not rather suffer wrong? Why not rather be defrauded? |
| 8Instead, you yourselves cheat and do wrong, and you do this to your brothers and sisters. | 8But you yourselves wrong and defraud—even your own brothers! |
| 9Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men | 9Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? | 13You say, "Food for the stomach and the stomach for food, and God will destroy them both." | 15Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! | 15Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! |
| 16Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, "The two will become one flesh." | 16Or do you not know that he who is joined to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, “The two will become one flesh.” |
| 17But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit. | 17But he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. |
