Psalm 38
NET Parallel NLT [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
NET BibleNew Living Translation
A psalm of David, written to get God's attention. O LORD, do not continue to rebuke me in your anger! Do not continue to punish me in your raging fury! 1O LORD, don’t rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your rage!
For your arrows pierce me, and your hand presses me down. 2Your arrows have struck deep, and your blows are crushing me.
My whole body is sick because of your judgment; I am deprived of health because of my sin. 3Because of your anger, my whole body is sick; my health is broken because of my sins.
For my sins overwhelm me; like a heavy load, they are too much for me to bear. 4My guilt overwhelms me— it is a burden too heavy to bear.
My wounds are infected and starting to smell, because of my foolish sins. 5My wounds fester and stink because of my foolish sins.
I am dazed and completely humiliated; all day long I walk around mourning. 6I am bent over and racked with pain. All day long I walk around filled with grief.
For I am overcome with shame and my whole body is sick. 7A raging fever burns within me, and my health is broken.
I am numb with pain and severely battered; I groan loudly because of the anxiety I feel. 8I am exhausted and completely crushed. My groans come from an anguished heart.
O Lord, you understand my heart's desire; my groaning is not hidden from you. 9You know what I long for, Lord; you hear my every sigh.
My heart beats quickly; my strength leaves me; I can hardly see. 10My heart beats wildly, my strength fails, and I am going blind.
Because of my condition, even my friends and acquaintances keep their distance; my neighbors stand far away. 11My loved ones and friends stay away, fearing my disease. Even my own family stands at a distance.
Those who seek my life try to entrap me; those who want to harm me speak destructive words; all day long they say deceitful things. 12Meanwhile, my enemies lay traps to kill me. Those who wish me harm make plans to ruin me. All day long they plan their treachery.
But I am like a deaf man--I hear nothing; I am like a mute who cannot speak. 13But I am deaf to all their threats. I am silent before them as one who cannot speak.
I am like a man who cannot hear and is incapable of arguing his defense. 14I choose to hear nothing, and I make no reply.
Yet I wait for you, O LORD! You will respond, O Lord, my God! 15For I am waiting for you, O LORD. You must answer for me, O Lord my God.
I have prayed for deliverance, because otherwise they will gloat over me; when my foot slips they will arrogantly taunt me. 16I prayed, “Don’t let my enemies gloat over me or rejoice at my downfall.”
For I am about to stumble, and I am in constant pain. 17I am on the verge of collapse, facing constant pain.
Yes, I confess my wrongdoing, and I am concerned about my sins. 18But I confess my sins; I am deeply sorry for what I have done.
But those who are my enemies for no reason are numerous; those who hate me without cause outnumber me. 19I have many aggressive enemies; they hate me without reason.
They repay me evil for the good I have done; though I have tried to do good to them, they hurl accusations at me. 20They repay me evil for good and oppose me for pursuing good.
Do not abandon me, O LORD! My God, do not remain far away from me! 21Do not abandon me, O LORD. Do not stand at a distance, my God.
Hurry and help me, O Lord, my deliverer! 22Come quickly to help me, O Lord my savior.
