A psalm of David, written to get God's attention. O LORD, do not continue to rebuke me in your anger! Do not continue to punish me in your raging fury! | 1LORD! Do not rebuke me in your anger; do not correct me in your wrath, |
For your arrows pierce me, and your hand presses me down. | 2because your arrows have sunk deep into me, and your hand has come down hard on me. |
My whole body is sick because of your judgment; I am deprived of health because of my sin. | 3My body is unhealthy due to your anger, and my bones have no rest due to my sin. |
For my sins overwhelm me; like a heavy load, they are too much for me to bear. | 4My iniquities loom over my head; like a cumbersome burden, they are too heavy for me. |
My wounds are infected and starting to smell, because of my foolish sins. | 5My wounds have putrefied and festered because of my foolishness. |
I am dazed and completely humiliated; all day long I walk around mourning. | 6I am bent over and walk about greatly bowed down; all day long I go around mourning. |
For I am overcome with shame and my whole body is sick. | 7My insides are burning and my body is unhealthy. |
I am numb with pain and severely battered; I groan loudly because of the anxiety I feel. | 8I am weak and utterly crushed; I cry out in distress because of my heart's anguish. |
O Lord, you understand my heart's desire; my groaning is not hidden from you. | 9Lord, all my longings are before you, and my groaning is not hidden from you. |
My heart beats quickly; my strength leaves me; I can hardly see. | 10My heart pounds, my strength fails me, even the gleam in my eye is gone. |
Because of my condition, even my friends and acquaintances keep their distance; my neighbors stand far away. | 11As for my friends and my neighbors, they stand aloof from my distress; even my close relatives stand at a distance. |
Those who seek my life try to entrap me; those who want to harm me speak destructive words; all day long they say deceitful things. | 12Those who seek my life lay snares for me; those who seek to do me harm brag all day long about their wicked planning. |
But I am like a deaf man--I hear nothing; I am like a mute who cannot speak. | 13I am like the deaf, who cannot hear, and like the mute, who cannot open his mouth. |
I am like a man who cannot hear and is incapable of arguing his defense. | 14Indeed, I have become like a man who hears nothing, and in whose mouth there is no rebuke. |
Yet I wait for you, O LORD! You will respond, O Lord, my God! | 15Because I have placed my hope in you, LORD, you will answer, Lord, my God. |
I have prayed for deliverance, because otherwise they will gloat over me; when my foot slips they will arrogantly taunt me. | 16For I said, "Do not let them gloat over me, as they congratulate themselves when my foot slips." |
For I am about to stumble, and I am in constant pain. | 17Indeed, I am being set up for a fall, and I am continuously reminded of my pain. |
Yes, I confess my wrongdoing, and I am concerned about my sins. | 18I confess my iniquity, and my sin troubles me. |
But those who are my enemies for no reason are numerous; those who hate me without cause outnumber me. | 19But my enemies are alive and well; those who hate me for no reason are numerous. |
They repay me evil for the good I have done; though I have tried to do good to them, they hurl accusations at me. | 20They reward my good with evil, opposing me because I seek to do good. |
Do not abandon me, O LORD! My God, do not remain far away from me! | 21Don't forsake me, LORD. My God, do not be so distant from me. |
Hurry and help me, O Lord, my deliverer! | 22Come quickly and help me, Lord, my deliverer. |
