Psalm 38
NET Parallel ESV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
NET BibleEnglish Standard Version
A psalm of David, written to get God's attention. O LORD, do not continue to rebuke me in your anger! Do not continue to punish me in your raging fury! 1O LORD, rebuke me not in your anger, nor discipline me in your wrath!
For your arrows pierce me, and your hand presses me down. 2For your arrows have sunk into me, and your hand has come down on me.
My whole body is sick because of your judgment; I am deprived of health because of my sin. 3There is no soundness in my flesh because of your indignation; there is no health in my bones because of my sin.
For my sins overwhelm me; like a heavy load, they are too much for me to bear. 4For my iniquities have gone over my head; like a heavy burden, they are too heavy for me.
My wounds are infected and starting to smell, because of my foolish sins. 5My wounds stink and fester because of my foolishness,
I am dazed and completely humiliated; all day long I walk around mourning. 6I am utterly bowed down and prostrate; all the day I go about mourning.
For I am overcome with shame and my whole body is sick. 7For my sides are filled with burning, and there is no soundness in my flesh.
I am numb with pain and severely battered; I groan loudly because of the anxiety I feel. 8I am feeble and crushed; I groan because of the tumult of my heart.
O Lord, you understand my heart's desire; my groaning is not hidden from you. 9O Lord, all my longing is before you; my sighing is not hidden from you.
My heart beats quickly; my strength leaves me; I can hardly see. 10My heart throbs; my strength fails me, and the light of my eyes—it also has gone from me.
Because of my condition, even my friends and acquaintances keep their distance; my neighbors stand far away. 11My friends and companions stand aloof from my plague, and my nearest kin stand far off.
Those who seek my life try to entrap me; those who want to harm me speak destructive words; all day long they say deceitful things. 12Those who seek my life lay their snares; those who seek my hurt speak of ruin and meditate treachery all day long.
But I am like a deaf man--I hear nothing; I am like a mute who cannot speak. 13But I am like a deaf man; I do not hear, like a mute man who does not open his mouth.
I am like a man who cannot hear and is incapable of arguing his defense. 14I have become like a man who does not hear, and in whose mouth are no rebukes.
Yet I wait for you, O LORD! You will respond, O Lord, my God! 15But for you, O LORD, do I wait; it is you, O Lord my God, who will answer.
I have prayed for deliverance, because otherwise they will gloat over me; when my foot slips they will arrogantly taunt me. 16For I said, “Only let them not rejoice over me, who boast against me when my foot slips!”
For I am about to stumble, and I am in constant pain. 17For I am ready to fall, and my pain is ever before me.
Yes, I confess my wrongdoing, and I am concerned about my sins. 18I confess my iniquity; I am sorry for my sin.
But those who are my enemies for no reason are numerous; those who hate me without cause outnumber me. 19But my foes are vigorous, they are mighty, and many are those who hate me wrongfully.
They repay me evil for the good I have done; though I have tried to do good to them, they hurl accusations at me. 20Those who render me evil for good accuse me because I follow after good.
Do not abandon me, O LORD! My God, do not remain far away from me! 21Do not forsake me, O LORD! O my God, be not far from me!
Hurry and help me, O Lord, my deliverer! 22Make haste to help me, O Lord, my salvation!
