So, since Christ suffered in the flesh, you also arm yourselves with the same attitude, because the one who has suffered in the flesh has finished with sin, | 1Therefore, since Christ has suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same purpose, because he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, |
in that he spends the rest of his time on earth concerned about the will of God and not human desires. | 2so as to live the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for the lusts of men, but for the will of God. |
For the time that has passed was sufficient for you to do what the non-Christians desire. You lived then in debauchery, evil desires, drunkenness, carousing, drinking bouts, and wanton idolatries. | 3For the time already past is sufficient for you to have carried out the desire of the Gentiles, having pursued a course of sensuality, lusts, drunkenness, carousing, drinking parties and abominable idolatries. |
So they are astonished when you do not rush with them into the same flood of wickedness, and they vilify you. | 4In all this, they are surprised that you do not run with them into the same excesses of dissipation, and they malign you; |
They will face a reckoning before Jesus Christ who stands ready to judge the living and the dead. | 5but they will give account to Him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. |
Now it was for this very purpose that the gospel was preached to those who are now dead, so that though they were judged in the flesh by human standards they may live spiritually by God's standards. | 6For the gospel has for this purpose been preached even to those who are dead, that though they are judged in the flesh as men, they may live in the spirit according to the will of God. |
For the culmination of all things is near. So be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of prayer. | 7The end of all things is near; therefore, be of sound judgment and sober spirit for the purpose of prayer. |
Above all keep your love for one another fervent, because love covers a multitude of sins. | 8Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins. |
Show hospitality to one another without complaining. | 9Be hospitable to one another without complaint. |
Just as each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of the varied grace of God. | 10As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. |
Whoever speaks, let it be with God's words. Whoever serves, do so with the strength that God supplies, so that in everything God will be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen. | 11Whoever speaks, is to do so as one who is speaking the utterances of God; whoever serves is to do so as one who is serving by the strength which God supplies; so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. |
Dear friends, do not be astonished that a trial by fire is occurring among you, as though something strange were happening to you. | 12Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange thing were happening to you; |
But rejoice in the degree that you have shared in the sufferings of Christ, so that when his glory is revealed you may also rejoice and be glad. | 13but to the degree that you share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that also at the revelation of His glory you may rejoice with exultation. |
If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory, who is the Spirit of God, rests on you. | 14If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. |
But let none of you suffer as a murderer or thief or criminal or as a troublemaker. | 15Make sure that none of you suffers as a murderer, or thief, or evildoer, or a troublesome meddler; |
But if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but glorify God that you bear such a name. | 16but if anyone suffers as a Christian, he is not to be ashamed, but is to glorify God in this name. |
For it is time for judgment to begin, starting with the house of God. And if it starts with us, what will be the fate of those who are disobedient to the gospel of God? | 17For it is time for judgment to begin with the household of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God? |
And if the righteous are barely saved, what will become of the ungodly and sinners? | 18AND IF IT IS WITH DIFFICULTY THAT THE RIGHTEOUS IS SAVED, WHAT WILL BECOME OF THE GODLESS MAN AND THE SINNER? |
So then let those who suffer according to the will of God entrust their souls to a faithful Creator as they do good. | 19Therefore, those also who suffer according to the will of God shall entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right. |
