This is what the LORD says: "Because Moab has committed three crimes--make that four!--I will not revoke my decree of judgment. They burned the bones of Edom's king into lime. | 1This is what the LORD says: "For three transgressions of Moab because they cremated the bones of the king of Edom, burning them to lime. |
So I will set Moab on fire, and it will consume Kerioth's fortresses. Moab will perish in the heat of battle amid war cries and the blaring of the ram's horn. | 2So I will send down fire upon Moab, and it will devour the fortified citadels of Kerioth. Moab will die in the uproar of battle, with a war cry and with the trumpeting of the ram's horn. |
I will remove Moab's leader; I will kill all Moab's officials with him." The LORD has spoken! | 3I will execute their rulers among them, killing all of their officials as well," says the LORD. |
This is what the LORD says: "Because Judah has committed three covenant transgressions--make that four!--I will not revoke my decree of judgment. They rejected the LORD's law; they did not obey his commands. Their false gods, to which their fathers were loyal, led them astray. | 4This is what the LORD says: "For three transgressions of Judah —and now for a fourth— I will not turn away; because they rejected the Law of the LORD and did not keep his statutes. Their own lies made them wander off, following along the same path their ancestors walked. |
So I will set Judah on fire, and it will consume Jerusalem's fortresses." | 5So I will send down fire upon Judah, and it will devour the fortified citadels of Jerusalem." |
This is what the LORD says: "Because Israel has committed three covenant transgressions--make that four!--I will not revoke my decree of judgment. They sold the innocent for silver, the needy for a pair of sandals. | 6This is what the LORD says: "For three transgressions of Israel —and now for a fourth— I will not turn away; because they sold the righteous for money, and the poor for sandals, |
They trample on the dirt-covered heads of the poor; they push the destitute away. A man and his father go to the same girl; in this way they show disrespect for my moral purity. | 7moving quickly to rub the face of the needy in the dirt. Corrupting the ways of the humble, a man and his father go to the same woman, deliberately defiling my holy name. |
They stretch out on clothing seized as collateral; they do so right beside every altar! They drink wine bought with the fines they have levied; they do so right in the temple of their God! | 8They lay down beside every altar, on garments pledged as collateral, drinking wine paid for through fines imposed by the temple of their gods. |
For Israel's sake I destroyed the Amorites. They were as tall as cedars and as strong as oaks, but I destroyed the fruit on their branches and their roots in the ground. | 9Yet it was I who destroyed the Amorites in front of them, though their height seemed like a cedar, though their strength seemed like an oak, but whose fruit I destroyed from above and the roots from beneath. |
I brought you up from the land of Egypt; I led you through the wilderness for forty years so you could take the Amorites' land as your own. | 10Furthermore, I brought you up from the land of Egypt, leading you in the wilderness for 40 years, to take possession of the land of the Amorites. |
I made some of your sons prophets and some of your young men Nazirites. Is this not true, you Israelites?" The LORD is speaking! | 11I also raised up your sons to be prophets, and from your young men I raised up Nazirites. Is this not true, people of Israel?" declares the LORD. |
"But you made the Nazirites drink wine; you commanded the prophets, 'Do not prophesy!' | 12"But you forced the Nazirites to drink wine, and commanded the prophets, 'You are not to prophesy!' |
Look! I will press you down, like a cart loaded down with grain presses down. | 13"Oh, how I am burdened down with you, as a wagon is overloaded with harvested grain! |
Fast runners will find no place to hide; strong men will have no strength left; warriors will not be able to save their lives. | 14So the swift runner will not escape, the valiant will not fortify his strength, and the mighty warrior will not save his life. |
Archers will not hold their ground; fast runners will not save their lives, nor will those who ride horses. | 15The skilled archer will not be able to stand, the swift runner will not survive, and the mounted rider will not preserve his own life. |
Bravehearted warriors will run away naked in that day." The LORD is speaking! | 16Even the bravest of elite troops will run away naked at that time," declares the LORD. |
