When King Jabin of Hazor heard the news, he organized a coalition, including King Jobab of Madon, the king of Shimron, the king of Acshaph,1When Jabin king of Hazor heard this news, he sent a message to: Jobab king of Madon, the kings of Shimron and Achshaph,
and the northern kings who ruled in the hill country, the Arabah south of Kinnereth, the lowlands, and the heights of Dor to the west.2and the kings of the north in the hill country, the Arabah south of Chinnereth, the Judean foothills, and the Slopes of Dor to the west,
Canaanites came from the east and west; Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, and Jebusites from the hill country; and Hivites from below Hermon in the area of Mizpah.3the Canaanites in the east and west, the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, and Jebusites in the hill country, and the Hivites at the foot of Hermon in the land of Mizpah.
These kings came out with their armies; they were as numerous as the sand on the seashore and had a large number of horses and chariots.4They went out with all their armies--a multitude as numerous as the sand on the seashore--along with a vast number of horses and chariots.
All these kings gathered and joined forces at the Waters of Merom to fight Israel. 5All these kings joined forces; they came together and camped at the waters of Merom to attack Israel.
The LORD told Joshua, "Don't be afraid of them, for about this time tomorrow I will cause all of them to lie dead before Israel. You must hamstring their horses and burn their chariots."6The LORD said to Joshua, "Do not be afraid of them, for at this time tomorrow I will cause all of them to be killed before Israel. You are to hamstring their horses and burn up their chariots."
Joshua and his whole army caught them by surprise at the Waters of Merom and attacked them.7So Joshua and his whole military force surprised them at the waters of Merom and attacked them.
The LORD handed them over to Israel and they struck them down and chased them all the way to Greater Sidon, Misrephoth Maim, and the Mizpah Valley to the east. They struck them down until no survivors remained.8The LORD handed them over to Israel, and they struck them down, pursuing them as far as Great Sidon and Misrephoth-maim, and to the east as far as the Valley of Mizpeh. They struck them down, leaving no survivors.
Joshua did to them as the LORD had commanded him; he hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots. 9Joshua treated them as the LORD had told him; he hamstrung their horses and burned up their chariots.
At that time Joshua turned, captured Hazor, and struck down its king with the sword, for Hazor was at that time the leader of all these kingdoms.10At that time Joshua turned back, captured Hazor, and struck down its king with the sword, because Hazor had formerly been the leader of all these kingdoms.
They annihilated everyone who lived there with the sword--no one who breathed remained--and burned Hazor. 11They struck down everyone in it with the sword, completely destroying them; he left no one alive. Then he burned down Hazor.
Joshua captured all these royal cities and all their kings and annihilated them with the sword, as Moses the LORD's servant had commanded.12Joshua captured all these kings and their cities and struck them down with the sword. He completely destroyed them, as Moses the LORD's servant had commanded.
But Israel did not burn any of the cities located on mounds, except for Hazor; it was the only one Joshua burned.13However, Israel did not burn any of the cities that stood on their mounds except Hazor, which Joshua burned.
The Israelites plundered all the goods of these cities and the cattle, but they totally destroyed all the people and allowed no one who breathed to live.14The Israelites plundered all the spoils and cattle of these cities for themselves. But they struck down every person with the sword until they had annihilated them, leaving no one alive.
Moses the LORD's servant passed on the LORD's commands to Joshua, and Joshua did as he was told. He did not ignore any of the commands the LORD had given Moses. 15Just as the LORD had commanded His servant Moses, Moses commanded Joshua. That is what Joshua did, leaving nothing undone of all that the LORD had commanded Moses.
Joshua conquered the whole land, including the hill country, all the Negev, all the land of Goshen, the lowlands, the Arabah, the hill country of Israel and its lowlands,16So Joshua took all this land--the hill country, all the Negev, all the land of Goshen, the foothills, the Arabah, and the hill country of Israel with its foothills--
from Mount Halak on up to Seir, as far as Baal Gad in the Lebanon Valley below Mount Hermon. He captured all their kings and executed them.17from Mount Halak, which ascends to Seir, as far as Baal-gad in the Valley of Lebanon at the foot of Mount Hermon. He captured all their kings and struck them down, putting them to death.
Joshua campaigned against these kings for quite some time.18Joshua waged war with all these kings for a long time.
No city made peace with the Israelites (except the Hivites living in Gibeon); they had to conquer all of them,19No city made peace with the Israelites except the Hivites who inhabited Gibeon; all of them were taken in battle.
for the LORD determined to make them obstinate so they would attack Israel. He wanted Israel to annihilate them without mercy, as he had instructed Moses. 20For it was the LORD's intention to harden their hearts, so that they would engage Israel in battle, be completely destroyed without mercy, and be annihilated, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.
At that time Joshua attacked and eliminated the Anakites from the hill country--from Hebron, Debir, Anab, and all the hill country of Judah and Israel. Joshua annihilated them and their cities.21At that time Joshua proceeded to exterminate the Anakim from the hill country--Hebron, Debir, Anab--all the hill country of Judah and of Israel. Joshua completely destroyed them with their cities.
No Anakites were left in Israelite territory, though some remained in Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod.22No Anakim were left in the land of the Israelites, except for some remaining in Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod.
Joshua conquered the whole land, just as the LORD had promised Moses, and he assigned Israel their tribal portions. Then the land was free of war. 23So Joshua took the entire land, in keeping with all that the LORD had told Moses. Joshua then gave it as an inheritance to Israel according to their tribal allotments. After this, the land had rest from war.
