1When David was old and approaching the end of his life, he made his son Solomon king over Israel. 1When David was old and full of days, he installed his son Solomon as king over Israel.
2David assembled all the leaders of Israel, along with the priests and the Levites.2Then he gathered all the leaders of Israel, the priests, and the Levites.
3The Levites who were thirty years old and up were counted; there were 38,000 men.3The Levites 30 years old or more were counted; the total number of men was 38,000 by headcount."
4David said, "Of these, 24,000 are to direct the work of the LORD's temple; 6,000 are to be officials and judges;4Of these," David said, "24,000 are to be in charge of the work on the LORD's temple, 6,000 are to be officers and judges,
54,000 are to be gatekeepers; and 4,000 are to praise the LORD with the instruments I supplied for worship."5 4,000 are to be gatekeepers, and 4,000 are to praise the LORD with the instruments that I have made for worship."
6David divided them into groups corresponding to the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. 6Then David divided them into divisions according to Levi's sons: Gershom, Kohath, and Merari.
7The Gershonites included Ladan and Shimei. 7The Gershonites: Ladan and Shimei.
8The sons of Ladan: Jehiel the oldest, Zetham, and Joel--three in all. 8Ladan's sons: Jehiel was the first, then Zetham, and Joel--three.
9The sons of Shimei: Shelomoth, Haziel, and Haran--three in all. These were the leaders of the family of Ladan. 9Shimei's sons: Shelomoth, Haziel, and Haran--three. Those were the heads of the families of Ladan.
10The sons of Shimei: Jahath, Zina, Jeush, and Beriah. These were Shimei's sons--four in all.10Shimei's sons: Jahath, Zizah, Jeush, and Beriah. Those were Shimei's sons--four.
11Jahath was the oldest and Zizah the second oldest. Jeush and Beriah did not have many sons, so they were considered one family with one responsibility. 11Jahath was the first and Zizah was the second; however, Jeush and Beriah did not have many sons, so they became an ancestral house and received a single assignment.
12The sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel--four in all. 12Kohath's sons: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel--four.
13The sons of Amram: Aaron and Moses. Aaron and his descendants were chosen on a permanent basis to consecrate the most holy items, to offer sacrifices before the LORD, to serve him, and to praise his name.13Amram's sons: Aaron and Moses. Aaron, along with his descendants, was set apart forever to consecrate the most holy things, to burn incense in the presence of Yahweh, to minister to Him, and to pronounce blessings in His name forever.
14The descendants of Moses the man of God were considered Levites. 14As for Moses the man of God, his sons were named among the tribe of Levi.
15The sons of Moses: Gershom and Eliezer. 15Moses' sons: Gershom and Eliezer.
16The son of Gershom: Shebuel the oldest. 16Gershom's sons: Shebuel was first.
17The son of Eliezer was Rehabiah, the oldest. Eliezer had no other sons, but Rehabiah had many descendants. 17Eliezer's sons were Rehabiah, first; Eliezer did not have any other sons, but Rehabiah's sons were very numerous.
18The son of Izhar: Shelomith the oldest. 18Izhar's sons: Shelomith was first.
19The sons of Hebron: Jeriah the oldest, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, and Jekameam the fourth. 19Hebron's sons: Jeriah was first, Amariah second, Jahaziel third, and Jekameam fourth.
20The sons of Uzziel: Micah the oldest, and Isshiah the second. 20Uzziel's sons: Micah was first, and Isshiah second.
21The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. The sons of Mahli: Eleazar and Kish. 21Merari's sons: Mahli and Mushi. Mahli's sons: Eleazar and Kish.
22Eleazar died without having sons; he had only daughters. The sons of Kish, their cousins, married them. 22Eleazar died having no sons, only daughters. Their cousins, the sons of Kish, married them.
23The sons of Mushi: Mahli, Eder, and Jeremoth--three in all. 23Mushi's sons: Mahli, Eder, and Jeremoth--three.
24These were the descendants of Levi according to their families, that is, the leaders of families as counted and individually listed who carried out assigned tasks in the LORD's temple and were twenty years old and up.24These were the sons of Levi by their ancestral houses--the heads of families, according to their registration by name in the headcount--20 years old or more, who worked in the service of the LORD's temple.
25For David said, "The LORD God of Israel has given his people rest and has permanently settled in Jerusalem.25For David said, "The LORD God of Israel has given rest to His people, and He has come to stay in Jerusalem forever.
26So the Levites no longer need to carry the tabernacle or any of the items used in its service."26Also, the Levites no longer need to carry the tabernacle or any of the equipment for its service"--
27According to David's final instructions, the Levites twenty years old and up were counted. 27for according to the last words of David, the Levites 20 years old or more were to be counted--"
28Their job was to help Aaron's descendants in the service of the LORD's temple. They were to take care of the courtyards, the rooms, ceremonial purification of all holy items, and other jobs related to the service of God's temple.28but their duty will be to assist the sons of Aaron with the service of the LORD's temple, being responsible for the courts and the chambers, the purification of all the holy things, and the work of the service of God's temple--
29They also took care of the bread that is displayed, the flour for offerings, the unleavened wafers, the round cakes, the mixing, and all the measuring.29as well as the rows of the bread of the Presence, the fine flour for the grain offering, the wafers of unleavened bread, the baking, the mixing, and all measurements of volume and length.
30They also stood in a designated place every morning and offered thanks and praise to the LORD. They also did this in the evening30They are also to stand every morning to give thanks and praise to the LORD, and likewise in the evening.
31and whenever burnt sacrifices were offered to the LORD on the Sabbath and at new moon festivals and assemblies. A designated number were to serve before the LORD regularly in accordance with regulations.31Whenever burnt offerings are offered to the LORD on the Sabbaths, New Moons, and appointed festivals, they are to do so regularly in the LORD's presence according to the number prescribed for them.
32They were in charge of the meeting tent and the holy place, and helped their relatives, the descendants of Aaron, in the service of the LORD's temple. 32They are to carry out their responsibilities for the tent of meeting, for the holy place, and for their relatives, the sons of Aaron, in the service of the LORD's temple."
