1Now after this it came about that David defeated the Philistines and subdued them and took Gath and its towns from the hand of the Philistines. | 1Later David defeated the Philistines and subdued them. He took Gath and its surrounding towns away from the Philistines. |
2He defeated Moab, and the Moabites became servants to David, bringing tribute. | 2He defeated the Moabites; the Moabites became David's subjects and brought tribute. |
3David also defeated Hadadezer king of Zobah as far as Hamath, as he went to establish his rule to the Euphrates River. | 3David defeated King Hadadezer of Zobah as far as Hamath, when he went to extend his authority to the Euphrates River. |
4David took from him 1,000 chariots and 7,000 horsemen and 20,000 foot soldiers, and David hamstrung all the chariot horses, but reserved enough of them for 100 chariots. | 4David seized from him 1,000 chariots, 7,000 charioteers, and 20,000 infantrymen. David cut the hamstrings of all but a hundred of Hadadezer's chariot horses. |

6Then David put garrisons among the Arameans of Damascus; and the Arameans became servants to David, bringing tribute. 7David took the shields of gold which were carried by the servants of Hadadezer and brought them to Jerusalem. | 7David took the golden shields which Hadadezer's servants had carried and brought them to Jerusalem. |
8Also from Tibhath and from Cun, cities of Hadadezer, David took a very large amount of bronze, with which Solomon made the bronze sea and the pillars and the bronze utensils. | 8From Tibhath and Kun, Hadadezer's cities, David took a great deal of bronze. (Solomon used it to make the big bronze basin called "The Sea," the pillars, and other bronze items. |
9Now when Tou king of Hamath heard that David had defeated all the army of Hadadezer king of Zobah, | 9When King Tou of Hamath heard that David had defeated the entire army of King Hadadezer of Zobah, |
10he sent Hadoram his son to King David to greet him and to bless him, because he had fought against Hadadezer and had defeated him; for Hadadezer had been at war with Tou. And Hadoram brought all kinds of articles of gold and silver and bronze. | 10he sent his son Hadoram to King David to extend his best wishes and to pronounce a blessing on him for his victory over Hadadezer, for Tou had been at war with Hadadezer. 12Moreover Abishai the son of Zeruiah defeated 18,000 Edomites in the Valley of Salt. | 12Abishai son of Zeruiah killed 18,000 Edomites in the Valley of Salt. |
13Then he put garrisons in Edom, and all the Edomites became servants to David. And the LORD helped David wherever he went. | 13He placed garrisons in Edom, and all the Edomites became David's subjects. The LORD protected David wherever he campaigned. |
14So David reigned over all Israel; and he administered justice and righteousness for all his people. | 14David reigned over all Israel; he guaranteed justice for all his people. |
15Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the army, and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder; | 15Joab son of Zeruiah was commanding general of the army; Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was secretary; |
16and Zadok the son of Ahitub and Abimelech the son of Abiathar were priests, and Shavsha was secretary; | 16Zadok son of Ahitub and Abimelech son of Abiathar were priests; Shavsha was scribe; |
17and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and the Pelethites, and the sons of David were chiefs at the king's side. | 17Benaiah son of Jehoiada supervised the Kerethites and Pelethites; and David's sons were the king's leading officials. |
