Now when David reached old age, he made his son Solomon king over Israel. | 1When David was old and full of days, he installed his son Solomon as king over Israel. |
And he gathered together all the leaders of Israel with the priests and the Levites. | 2Then he gathered all the leaders of Israel, the priests, and the Levites. |
The Levites were numbered from thirty years old and upward, and their number by census of men was 38,000. | 3The Levites thirty years old or more were counted; the total number of men was thirty-eight thousand by headcount. |
Of these, 24,000 were to oversee the work of the house of the LORD; and 6,000 were officers and judges, | 4"Of these," David said, "twenty-four thousand are to be in charge of the work on the LORD's temple, six thousand are to be officers and judges, |
and 4,000 were gatekeepers, and 4,000 were praising the LORD with the instruments which David made for giving praise. | 5four thousand are to be gatekeepers, and four thousand are to praise the LORD with the instruments that I have made for worship." |
David divided them into divisions according to the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. | 6Then David divided them into divisions according to Levi's sons: Gershom, Kohath, and Merari. |
Of the Gershonites were Ladan and Shimei. | 7The Gershonites: Ladan and Shimei. |
The sons of Ladan were Jehiel the first and Zetham and Joel, three. | 8Ladan's sons: Jehiel was the first, then Zetham, and Joel--three. |
The sons of Shimei were Shelomoth and Haziel and Haran, three. These were the heads of the fathers' households of Ladan. | 9Shimei's sons: Shelomoth, Haziel, and Haran--three. Those were the heads of the families of Ladan. |
The sons of Shimei were Jahath, Zina, Jeush and Beriah. These four were the sons of Shimei. | 10Shimei's sons: Jahath, Zizah, Jeush, and Beriah. Those were Shimei's sons--four. |
Jahath was the first and Zizah the second; but Jeush and Beriah did not have many sons, so they became a father's household, one class. | 11Jahath was the first and Zizah was the second; however, Jeush and Beriah did not have many sons, so they became one family and received a single assignment. |
The sons of Kohath were four: Amram, Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel. | 12Kohath's sons: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel--four. |
The sons of Amram were Aaron and Moses. And Aaron was set apart to sanctify him as most holy, he and his sons forever, to burn incense before the LORD, to minister to Him and to bless in His name forever. | 13Amram's sons: Aaron and Moses. Aaron, along with his descendants, was set apart forever to consecrate the most holy things, to burn incense in the presence of the LORD, to minister to him, and to pronounce blessings in his name forever. |
But as for Moses the man of God, his sons were named among the tribe of Levi. | 14As for Moses the man of God, his sons were named among the tribe of Levi. |
The sons of Moses were Gershom and Eliezer. | 15Moses's sons: Gershom and Eliezer. |
The son of Gershom was Shebuel the chief. | 16Gershom's sons: Shebuel was first. |
The son of Eliezer was Rehabiah the chief; and Eliezer had no other sons, but the sons of Rehabiah were very many. | 17Eliezer's sons were Rehabiah, first; Eliezer did not have any other sons, but Rehabiah's sons were very numerous. |
The son of Izhar was Shelomith the chief. | 18Izhar's sons: Shelomith was first. |
The sons of Hebron were Jeriah the first, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third and Jekameam the fourth. | 19Hebron's sons: Jeriah was first, Amariah second, Jahaziel third, and Jekameam fourth. |
The sons of Uzziel were Micah the first and Isshiah the second. | 20Uzziel's sons: Micah was first, and Isshiah second. |
The sons of Merari were Mahli and Mushi. The sons of Mahli were Eleazar and Kish. | 21Merari's sons: Mahli and Mushi. Mahli's sons: Eleazar and Kish. |
Eleazar died and had no sons, but daughters only, so their brothers, the sons of Kish, took them as wives. | 22Eleazar died having no sons, only daughters. Their cousins, the sons of Kish, married them. |
The sons of Mushi were three: Mahli, Eder and Jeremoth. | 23Mushi's sons: Mahli, Eder, and Jeremoth--three. |
These were the sons of Levi according to their fathers' households, even the heads of the fathers' households of those of them who were counted, in the number of names by their census, doing the work for the service of the house of the LORD, from twenty years old and upward. | 24These were the descendants of Levi by their ancestral families--the family heads, according to their registration by name in the headcount--twenty years old or more, who worked in the service of the LORD's temple. |
For David said, "The LORD God of Israel has given rest to His people, and He dwells in Jerusalem forever. | 25For David said, "The LORD God of Israel has given rest to his people, and he has come to stay in Jerusalem forever. |
"Also, the Levites will no longer need to carry the tabernacle and all its utensils for its service." | 26Also, the Levites no longer need to carry the tabernacle or any of the equipment for its service"-- |
For by the last words of David the sons of Levi were numbered from twenty years old and upward. | 27for according to the last words of David, the Levites twenty years old or more were to be counted-- |
For their office is to assist the sons of Aaron with the service of the house of the LORD, in the courts and in the chambers and in the purifying of all holy things, even the work of the service of the house of God, | 28"but their duty will be to assist the descendants of Aaron with the service of the LORD's temple, being responsible for the courts and the chambers, the purification of all the holy things, and the work of the service of God's temple-- |
and with the showbread, and the fine flour for a grain offering, and unleavened wafers, or what is baked in the pan or what is well-mixed, and all measures of volume and size. | 29as well as the rows of the Bread of the Presence, the fine flour for the grain offering, the wafers of unleavened bread, the baking, the mixing, and all measurements of volume and length. |
They are to stand every morning to thank and to praise the LORD, and likewise at evening, | 30They are also to stand every morning to give thanks and praise to the LORD, and likewise in the evening. |
and to offer all burnt offerings to the LORD, on the sabbaths, the new moons and the fixed festivals in the number set by the ordinance concerning them, continually before the LORD. | 31Whenever burnt offerings are offered to the LORD on the Sabbaths, New Moons, and appointed festivals, they are to offer them regularly in the LORD's presence according to the number prescribed for them. |
Thus they are to keep charge of the tent of meeting, and charge of the holy place, and charge of the sons of Aaron their relatives, for the service of the house of the LORD. | 32They are to carry out their responsibilities for the tent of meeting, for the holy place, and for their relatives, the descendants of Aaron, in the service of the LORD's temple." |
