To the chief Musician upon ShoshannimEduth, A Psalm of Asaph. Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, thou that leadest Joseph like a flock; thou that dwellest between the cherubims, shine forth. | 1For the music director; according to the shushan-eduth style; a psalm of Asaph. O shepherd of Israel, pay attention, you who lead Joseph like a flock of sheep! You who sit enthroned above the winged angels, reveal your splendor! |
Before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh stir up thy strength, and come and save us. | 2In the sight of Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh reveal your power! Come and deliver us! |
Turn us again, O God, and cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved. | 3O God, restore us! Smile on us! Then we will be delivered! |
O LORD God of hosts, how long wilt thou be angry against the prayer of thy people? | 4O LORD God, invincible warrior! How long will you remain angry at your people while they pray to you? |
Thou feedest them with the bread of tears; and givest them tears to drink in great measure. | 5You have given them tears as food; you have made them drink tears by the measure. |
Thou makest us a strife unto our neighbours: and our enemies laugh among themselves. | 6You have made our neighbors dislike us, and our enemies insult us. |
Turn us again, O God of hosts, and cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved. | 7O God, invincible warrior, restore us! Smile on us! Then we will be delivered! |
Thou hast brought a vine out of Egypt: thou hast cast out the heathen, and planted it. | 8You uprooted a vine from Egypt; you drove out nations and transplanted it. |
Thou preparedst room before it, and didst cause it to take deep root, and it filled the land. | 9You cleared the ground for it; it took root, and filled the land. |
The hills were covered with the shadow of it, and the boughs thereof were like the goodly cedars. | 10The mountains were covered by its shadow, the highest cedars by its branches. |
She sent out her boughs unto the sea, and her branches unto the river. | 11Its branches reached the Mediterranean Sea, and its shoots the Euphrates River. |
Why hast thou then broken down her hedges, so that all they which pass by the way do pluck her? | 12Why did you break down its walls, so that all who pass by pluck its fruit? |
The boar out of the wood doth waste it, and the wild beast of the field doth devour it. | 13The wild boars of the forest ruin it; the insects of the field feed on it. |
Return, we beseech thee, O God of hosts: look down from heaven, and behold, and visit this vine; | 14O God, invincible warrior, come back! Look down from heaven and take notice! Take care of this vine, |
And the vineyard which thy right hand hath planted, and the branch that thou madest strong for thyself. | 15the root your right hand planted, the shoot you made to grow! |
It is burned with fire, it is cut down: they perish at the rebuke of thy countenance. | 16It is burned and cut down. They die because you are displeased with them. |
Let thy hand be upon the man of thy right hand, upon the son of man whom thou madest strong for thyself. | 17May you give support to the one you have chosen, to the one whom you raised up for yourself! |
So will not we go back from thee: quicken us, and we will call upon thy name. | 18Then we will not turn away from you. Revive us and we will pray to you! |
Turn us again, O LORD God of hosts, cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved. | 19O LORD God, invincible warrior, restore us! Smile on us! Then we will be delivered! |
