Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour, and Lord Jesus Christ, which is our hope;1Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope:
Unto Timothy, my own son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.2To Timothy, my true son in the faith. Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine,3As I urged you when I went to Macedonia, remain in Ephesus so that you may instruct certain people not to teach different doctrine
Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.4or to pay attention to myths and endless genealogies. These promote empty speculations rather than God's plan, which operates by faith.
Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:5Now the goal of our instruction is love that comes from a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith.
From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling;6Some have deviated from these and turned aside to fruitless discussion.
Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm.7They want to be teachers of the law, although they don't understand what they are saying or what they are insisting on.
But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully;8But we know that the law is good, provided one uses it legitimately.
Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,9We know that the law is not meant for a righteous person, but for the lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinful, for the unholy and irreverent, for those who kill their fathers and mothers, for murderers,
For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;10for the sexually immoral and homosexuals, for kidnappers, liars, perjurers, and for whatever else is contrary to the sound teaching
According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.11based on the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was entrusted to me.
And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry;12I give thanks to Christ Jesus our Lord who has strengthened me, because He considered me faithful, appointing me to the ministry--
Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.13one who was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an arrogant man. But I received mercy because I acted out of ignorance in unbelief.
And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.14And the grace of our Lord overflowed, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.
This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.15This saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance: "Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners"--and I am the worst of them.
Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.16But I received mercy for this reason, so that in me, the worst of them, Christ Jesus might demonstrate His extraordinary patience as an example to those who would believe in Him for eternal life.
Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.17Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.
This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare;18Timothy, my son, I am giving you this instruction in keeping with the prophecies previously made about you, so that by them you may strongly engage in battle,
Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck:19having faith and a good conscience. Some have rejected these and have suffered the shipwreck of their faith.
Of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme.20Hymenaeus and Alexander are among them, and I have delivered them to Satan, so that they may be taught not to blaspheme.
