This is a record of the genealogies of Aaron and Moses current as of the day on which the LORD addressed Moses on Mount Sinai. 1Now these are the records of Aaron and Moses when the LORD spoke with Moses on Mount Sinai.
The sons of Aaron were Nadab the first-born, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar 2These are the names of the sons of Aaron: Nadab, the firstborn, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.
who were anointed priests and whom he consecrated as priests. 3These are the names of the sons of Aaron, the anointed priests, whom he consecrated to minister as priests.
Nadab and Abihu died in the LORD's presence when they offered unauthorized fire before him in the Sinai wilderness. Since they didn't have their own children, Eleazar and Ithamar ministered as priest under the authority of Aaron their father.4Nadab and Abihu died before the LORD when they offered strange fire before the LORD in the wilderness of Sinai, and they had no children. So Eleazar and Ithamar ministered as priests in the presence of Aaron their father.
The LORD told Moses, 5The LORD spoke to Moses:
"Bring the tribe of Levi near and present them to Aaron the priest so they may serve him. 6"Bring the tribe of Levi near, and present them before Aaron the priest, that they may serve him.
They are to take care of his needs and the needs of the whole congregation at the Tent of Meeting by performing duties at the tent. 7They are responsible for his needs and the needs of the whole community before the tent of meeting, by attending to the service of the tabernacle.
They are to take charge of the utensils at the Tent of Meeting and meet the needs of the Israelis by performing duties on behalf of the tent. 8And they are responsible for all the furnishings of the tent of meeting, and for the needs of the Israelites, as they serve in the tabernacle.
Assign the descendants of Levi to Aaron and his sons from among the Israelis. 9You are to assign the Levites to Aaron and his sons; they will be assigned exclusively to him out of all the Israelites.
Appoint Aaron and his sons so that they are to take responsibility for their priesthood. Any unauthorized person who approaches it is to be put to death."10So you are to appoint Aaron and his sons, and they will be responsible for their priesthood; but the unauthorized person who comes near must be put to death."
Later, the LORD told Moses, 11Then the LORD spoke to Moses:
"I'm taking the descendants of Levi for myself from among the Israelis in place of every first-born who opens the womb. The descendants of Levi belong to me 12"Look, I myself have taken the Levites from among the Israelites instead of every firstborn who opens the womb among the Israelites. So the Levites belong to me,
because all the first-born belong to me. When I destroyed all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, I consecrated all the first-born in Israel for myself—from human beings to livestock. They belong to me, since I am the LORD."13because all the firstborn are mine. When I destroyed all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, I set apart for myself all the firstborn in Israel, both man and beast. They belong to me. I am the LORD."
The LORD also told Moses in the Sinai wilderness, 14Then the LORD spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai:
"Number the descendants of Levi according to their ancestral houses and tribes, numbering every male from a month old and above."15"Number the Levites by their clans and their families; every male from a month old and upward you are to number."
So Moses numbered them according to the instruction of the LORD, as he had been commanded. 16So Moses numbered them according to the word of the LORD, just as he had been commanded.
These are Levi's descendants by name: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. 17These were the sons of Levi by their names: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.
These are names of Gershon's descendants according to their families: Libni and Shimei. 18These are the names of the sons of Gershon by their families: Libni and Shimei.
These are the names of Kohath's descendants according to their families: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel. 19The sons of Kohath by their families were: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel.
Merari's descendants according to their families were Mahli and Mushi. These are the families of the descendants of Levi according to their ancestral house.20The sons of Merari by their families were Mahli and Mushi. These are the families of the Levites by their clans.
The families of Libni and Shimei were descendants of Gershon. As families of the descendants of Gershon, 21From Gershon came the family of the Libnites and the family of the Shimeites; these were the families of the Gershonites.
all the males a month old and above numbered 7,500. 22Those of them who were numbered, counting every male from a month old and upward, were 7,500.
The families of the descendants of Gershon encamped behind the tent toward the west.23The families of the Gershonites were to camp behind the tabernacle toward the west.
The leader of the tribe and family of Gershon was Lael's son Eliasaph. 24Now the leader of the clan of the Gershonites was Eliasaph son of Lael.
The duties of the descendants of Gershon at the Tent of Meeting pertained to the tent, the tent covering, the curtain to the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, 25And the responsibilities of the Gershonites in the tent of meeting included the tabernacle, the tent with its covering, the curtain at the entrance of the tent of meeting,
the hangings at the courtyard, the curtain at the entrance of the courtyard that surrounded the tent, the altar, and all of the tent cords in use.26the hangings of the courtyard, the curtain at the entrance to the courtyard that surrounded the tabernacle and the altar, and their ropes, plus all the service connected with these things.
The families of Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel were descendants of Kohath. As families of the descendants of Kohath, 27From Kohath came the family of the Amramites, the family of the Izharites, the family of the Hebronites, and the family of the Uzzielites; these were the families of the Kohathites.
all the males a month old and above numbered 8,600. They were tasked to the care of the sanctuary. 28Counting every male from a month old and upward, there were 8,600. They were responsible for the care of the sanctuary.
The descendants of Kohath encamped beside the tent toward the south. 29The families of the Kohathites were to camp on the south side of the tabernacle.
The leader of the tribe and family of Kohath was Uzziel's son Elizaphan. 30Now the leader of the clan of the families of the Kohathites was Elizaphan son of Uzziel.
Their duties pertained to the ark, the table, the lamp stand, the altars, the utensils of the sanctuary with which they ministered, and all the curtains in use. 31Their responsibilities included the ark, the table, the lampstand, the altars, and the utensils of the sanctuary with which they ministered, the curtain, and all their service.
The chief of all the leaders of the descendants of Levi was Aaron the priest's son Eleazar. He was assigned to oversee those who were in charge of the services of the sanctuary.32Now the head of all the Levitical leaders was Eleazar son of Aaron the priest. He was appointed over those who were responsible for the sanctuary.
The families of Mahli and Mushi were descendants of Merari. As families of Merari, 33From Merari came the family of the Mahlites and the family of the Mushites; these were the families of Merari.
all the males a month old and above numbered 6,200. 34Those of them who were numbered, counting every male from a month old and upward, were 6,200.
The leader of the tribe and family of Merari was Abihail's son Zuriel. The descendants of Merari encamped beside the tent toward the north. 35Now the leader of the clan of the families of Merari was Zuriel son of Abihail. These were to camp on the north side of the tabernacle.
The duties of the caretakers from the descendants of Merari included the boards of the tent, its bars, crossbars, sockets, all its utensils for their services, 36The appointed responsibilities of the Merarites included the frames of the tabernacle, its crossbars, its posts, its sockets, its utensils, plus all the service connected with these things,
the pillars around the courtyard, their sockets, pegs, and tent cords.37and the pillars of the courtyard all around, with their sockets, their pegs, and their ropes.
In front of the tent and east of the Tent of Meeting, Moses, Aaron, and Aaron's sons encamped facing the east. They were tasked to perform the duties of the sanctuary and care for the needs of the Israelis. Any unauthorized person who approached was to be executed. 38But those who were to camp in front of the tabernacle on the east, in front of the tent of meeting, were Moses, Aaron, and his sons. They were responsible for the needs of the sanctuary and for the needs of the Israelites, but the unauthorized person who approached was to be put to death.
As the LORD had instructed, everyone counted by Moses and Aaron from the descendants of Levi, according to their tribe, all males from a month old and above numbered 22,000.39All who were numbered of the Levites, whom Moses and Aaron numbered by the word of the LORD, according to their families, every male from a month old and upward, were 22,000.
Later the LORD instructed Moses: "Number all the first-born males of Israel from a month old and above and list their names. 40Then the LORD said to Moses, "Number all the firstborn males of the Israelites from a month old and upward, and take the number of their names.
Separate the descendants of Levi for me—since I am the LORD—in place of all the first-born sons of Israel. Also separate the livestock of the descendants of Levi in place of all the firstborn of the livestock of Israel." 41And take the Levites for me--I am the LORD--instead of all the firstborn males among the Israelites, and the livestock of the Levites instead of all the firstborn of the livestock of the Israelites."
So Moses numbered all the firstborn from the sons of Israel just as the LORD commanded him. 42So Moses numbered all the firstborn males among the Israelites, as the LORD had commanded him.
All the first-born males according to the list of their names from a month old and above numbered 22,273.43And all the firstborn males, by the number of the names from a month old and upward, totaled 22,273.
Then the LORD told Moses, 44Then the LORD spoke to Moses:
"Separate the descendants of Levi in place of all the firstborn sons of Israel and the livestock of the descendants of Levi in place of their livestock. The descendants of Levi belong to me, since I am the LORD. 45"Take the Levites instead of all the firstborn males among the Israelites, and the livestock of the Levites instead of their livestock. And the Levites will be mine. I am the LORD.
You are to pay a ransom for the 273 first-born Israelis who exceed the census number of the descendants of Levi, 46And for the redemption of the 273 firstborn males of the Israelites who exceed the number of the Levites,
so collect five shekels for each individual, denominated in shekels of the sanctuary, that is, the shekel that weighs 20 gerahs.47collect five shekels for each one individually; you are to collect this amount in the currency of the sanctuary shekel (this shekel is twenty gerahs).
Then give the money meant for ransom of their excess to Aaron and his sons."48And give the money for the redemption of the excess number of them to Aaron and his sons."
So Moses took the ransom money to account for the difference in the total number of those redeemed by the descendants of Levi. 49So Moses took the redemption money from those who were in excess of those redeemed by the Levites.
From the firstborn of the Israelis, Moses took money amounting to 1,365 shekels according to the shekel of the sanctuary. 50From the firstborn males of the Israelites he collected the money, 1,365 shekels, according to the sanctuary shekel.
Moses gave the ransom money to Aaron and his sons according to the LORD's instructions, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.51Moses gave the redemption money to Aaron and his sons, according to the word of the LORD, as the LORD had commanded Moses.
